I have a contract with an international school in BKK. I am here on a retirement visa (came in on O visa - counsel general advice) and am told by immigration that I have to leave country to have any chance at a Non B. In addition I have to cancel retire visa before I leave and it is up to whatever agent at an embassy how long I get to stay here at that point. Was told I would not get a tourist visa, that would all be up whatever embassy. Nightmare - I am veteran teacher from U.S. with an M.S. and great references but am older. I have been here for over a year. Any legit advice? Where to go? What all will an embassy ask for? How long will it take and cost? When I got retire visa lawyer said no problem switching visa. What a cluster.....

Thanks in advance for advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The author is seeking advice on switching from a retirement visa to a Non-B visa due to a job offer from an international school in Bangkok. They have been advised by immigration that they must leave the country and cancel their retirement visa before applying for the new visa at a Thai embassy. Comments provide various insights, such as the need for the school to apply for the work permit first, the importance of confirming the type of visa currently held, and recommendations for choosing an embassy (Vientiane being suggested). Additionally, comments note the maximum age for teachers in Thailand, clarifying that while Thais may be limited by age, foreigners may not face the same restrictions.

In terms of embassy choice, I'd suggest Vientiane. Cheap and easy to get there, usually a 2-day turn around, cheap and nice to stay in the meantime while you wait...

Robert is right about age maximum existing. 55 is the maximum for Thais to teach. It MAY be different for farang.

Plus, the age of retirement in Thailand is 60, NOT 55!

Foreigners can teach until any age, they are not government employees, and as such they are not subject to statutory retirement age.

I am gonna step in and say he does not need to cancel his extension at immigration as it is retirement, not employment. He has a multi-entry re-entry permit, just leave and apply for the new Non-B which will invalidate both his extension and re-entry permit.

The school needs to apply for the work permit first, than before you travel to a Thai Embassy or Consulate you cancel at Immigration your Extension of Stay. You visit the embassy or Consulate and apply for the Non Immigrant B visa, which would give you 90 days of stay. After 60 days inside Thailand with school papers you than apply for a new Extension of Stay based on working. You're older, so please check with Ministry of Labor the maximum age to work as teacher before you start the process.

International School so the age is not a factor there.

Need to confirm first what exactly your permission to stay is. 3 choices; Non-OA visa (multi-entry), Non-O(single entry) or an extension of stay issued by Immigration inside Thailand.
