I have a long term research visa (1 year) which will expire on Oct 20, 2026. But I am bound to leave Thailand on Sep 9, 2026, for the EU for my Ph.D. which spans 4 years. Does immigration require me to cancel the visa before I leave?
Answer summary
The consensus among community members is that you are not required to cancel your long-term research visa before leaving Thailand for your Ph.D. program, particularly if it's a Non-Immigrant Type-RA visa. However, if your status is an extension of stay rather than a visa, cancellation is recommended before exiting. It's advisable to obtain documentation from the immigration office regarding your departure. Additionally, some discussion suggests there may be nuances regarding grace periods following cancellation.

I am doubtful you have any Visa at all and instead it is much more likely you have an extension of stay from the immigration office here in Thailand.
In theory you are supposed to cancel extensions of stay at the immigration office that issued the extension before you exit the country
However
Because you're going to be gone for so long and it's unlikely you're going to come back on that type of Visa again I would say you could just exit and not have any issue.
If you can get documentation from the place that applied the documentation for your extension saying you'll stop I would go cancel the extension before you leave.
