Do I need a cancellation letter for my ED visa?

I will leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, so my current language school says the ED status ends automatically.

A visa agency says I should still get a cancellation letter.

Has anyone successfully returned later and applied for a new ED visa or DTV without a cancellation letter?

If you already have your visa extended, you should have it cancelled. Otherwise, when you come back with a new ED, you cannot extend your visa until you have the old one cancelled.

It depends. If you are still on the original 90 day ED visa you can just leave, but if you are on an extension of stay then you need to cancel it with a letter from your school stating your last day of study. Not cancelling it can cause issues in the future

Thank you. My school has agreed to prepare the cancellation letter and I can collect it next Tuesday.

If the letter states July 9 as my cancellation/departure date, should I visit Immigration immediately after collecting it, or wait until shortly before July 9?

Also, besides the cancellation letter and passport, is there anything else I need from Immigration (forms, copies, etc.)?

I am indeed on an Extension of Stay based on Education, valid until September 11, 2026. This is also my final extension under my current language school.

I will leave Thailand on July 9 without a re-entry permit and return end of August on a visa exemption.

Based on your advice, I will ask my school for a cancellation letter confirming my final day of study before I leave.

Are you really on a Non-ED visa or an Extension of Stay because it is the Extension of Stay that needs to be cancelled and this can be done in advance?
