ORIGINAL POSTER
I moving to a new rental condo within Chonburi next week. My Passport is with an agency for about a month. Do I need my original passport to register my new residence. I've recently done my 90 reporting if that matters. Thank you in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To register your new residence in Chonburi, you will need your original passport. It's advisable to wait until you retrieve your passport from the agency holding it, as it is necessary for completing the TM30 form for residency registration.

I thought many agents are able to bypass the under consideration stamp and waiting period?

Yes. You need passport to do new tm30.

Just wait until you get your passport back.

Just curious, why the hell is an agent holding your passport for a month? Just hope you don't get questioned by police for any reason, they'll fine you for not having it on you or readily available . Agent having it for a month is very suspicious.

It’s pretty typical especially now with the status quo of immigration rules in constant flux.

Anything that isn’t a simple 1 day turnaround at a local immigration office is taking weeks if not a month now. Work, marriage, especially education visas.

And if you need anything done by an office up country then yeah, they’re not exactly fast about things plus having to mail things around.

A lot of things changed when the new immigration boss took his position last year.

By the way if you use agent and they "use" your passport.. you have a document, or something like that from the agent that your process is running..

never give up your passport

Give them a picture

. I don't use an agent. I'm not paying someone a month's salary to do a days work, especially when I would do most of the paperwork for them anyway. It's It's rort..

It's standard procedure for "under consideration". Most likely he is getting a year long extension so he need to wait 3-4 weeks to get his passport back.

. More likely the agent does a monthly trip to immigration and too lazy to pick up and return it before and after.

@Steven **************
"More likely the agent does a monthly trip to immigration". Incorrect, most agents do not go to immigration at all, unless they are in Pattaya or Chiang Mai. In every other province, agents are not the one processing your passport, people way above them do.

@Steven **************
There is a 3-4 weeks under consideration even if you use an agent. So passport stay with them or with immigration on a pile somewhere waiting for their turn to get the yearly extension. It's been like this forever.

. Bullshit. I've done 4 yearly extensions and immigration give you back your passport during the 30 day under consideration. Thai imm law states you are supposed to carry it or have quick access to it at all times. Try doing anything at a govt office, bank , utility company , hotel, rental company without it.. passport belongs to your govt, not you.

This group is own by the biggest agency in Thailand (Thai Visa Centre), you can ask them... they will answer the same thing. You are confused between using vs not-using an agent. You can read my response to Jim Stuart above.

. A few days I would understand .A month is total bullshit. If you want to hand your most important legal document to total strangers for a month for no reason , be my guest. Bangkok= passport forgery capital of the world. .
Maxim ***********
@Steven **************
You don't seem to understand that you will need to send the agent your passport for a 2nd time went the under consideration is about to end, so it's more mailing and waste of time. Also, most agents are not in Bangkok. You have no idea what you are talking about, lol! There are 5 families in Thailand running the different agencies worth hundred of billions of baht. It's a huge industry run by people you will never heard of. Agents are middle-men, they are not the one who run the show (except in Pattaya and CM where agents work directly with the nearest immigration office).
Maxim ***********
@Steven **************
I was simply answering your question on "Why agent keep passport for a month?", it's standard procedure for them to do so. Saying "BS... blabla, I've done this and that on my own!", is irrelevant because you did not use an agent. Why asking a question if you wont accept the factual answer?
Steven ***************
@Maxim **********
. I'm well aware agents do it. Because they are unprofessional and ignore thai laws regarding passports. A "professional " wold collect the passport just prior to going to imm and return it asap after the 30 day consideration stamp is done. Thats what is bullshit about it. A month is totally unnecessary, also considering the exorbitant prices they charge for doing stuff all, a days work at most.
Maxim ***********
@Steven **************
Either your agent is reliable or not, if he is not, the number of days won't influence the outcome... it will be a bad outcome if you have an unreliable agent no matter if he keep the passport 1 day or 30 days. The issue here is that you are lacking experience in regard to agent so you are saying a bunch of stuff that are either irrelevant of flat out incorrect.

I thought standard procedure was an under consideration stamp, whereby you keep the passport and then come back at a stated time/date. Any agent that keeps a passport for a month is dodgy
Maxim ***********
@Jim *******
What you are describing is without the use of an agent, but if you use an agent, the passport stay with them because after a few weeks u get stamped for the full year. So yes, the under consideration still apply, but you don't need to travel twice. A lot of people use agents from other provinces, as some provinces don't have reliable agent. Just because you do not understand what agent do, or don't use them, doesn't mean it's dodgy. Maybe ask question instead of making judgment :). The owner of this group is an agent himself.
