TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a 60-day tourist visa in Thailand, set to expire on February 1, 2022, and wishes to stay until late February. They inquire if they can apply for a COVID extension before December 31, 2021. A community member responds that applications for a COVID extension should ideally be done 30 to 45 days before the visa's expiry and suggests that generally, a 30-day extension might be required before applying for the 60-day COVID extension, though some offices may allow applying for the 60-day directly.

At the moment the last possible day for apply is the 26th this month, it's unclear if they will extend it or not. You can apply 30 to 45 days (depends on the office) before the expiry date of your visa. At the most offices they will ask you to get the 30 day extension first before you can have the 60 day, but some also let you do the 60 day directly.

Jarkko Takamaa That's the point... not to many countries left where you can't enter, probably none right now. Fun fact... many people came lately or are just on their way and plan with this 60 day extension... ;-)

By the way, do they check if there are any flights back to your home country? Or do they grant the extension to anyone?

Normally to everyone, but things may change now with the reopening. Also that you have to ask at your local office. I've heard from some places that they start ask for tickets, but most don't... not yet... 😉

Don't forget that this extension is officially called "unable to travel". Well... since about one year it isn't that hard anymore to leave the country, isn't it? 🤔

Do you know if I can already extend my visa with 2 months, even though my visa only expires at

?

If they grant you the "Covid extension" without the 30 day extension first, then you can do it already (30-45 days before). You have to ask your local office how they do it. And don't wait until the last day, it's normally pretty crowded then... ;-)

I’ve seen a couple people mention seeing something from Richard Barrow that is it will likely get extended again, but 30 days instead of the prior 60s. But it’s thailand so who knows

Yes, there are these rumors. We'll find out ... as always a day or two beforehand... ;-)
