So a tourist visa and a "visa exempt" can each be extended for 30 days?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Both a tourist visa and a visa-exempt entry can be extended for 30 days in Thailand, but not all tourist visas qualify for this extension. Certain nationalities may have restrictions on extensions for tourist visas.

Er not quite. Any visa exempt entry can be extended for 30 days. Not all tourist visas can.

If you’re from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria or Uganda then you’re out of luck getting an extension off a tourist visa.

The OP didn’t mention their nationality. I was just pointing out that not all tourist visas are the same. Some allow an extension. Some don’t.

Correct. They are both considered "tourist" entries, so both qualify for the 30 day tourist extension. This extension can only be received one time per entry into Thailand.
