TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster (OP) inquired about needing a confirmed return ticket for a 30-day extension after entering Thailand with a visa exempt entry. The community clarified that the OP entered Thailand on a visa exempt stamp, not a visa on arrival. For the extension, there is no requirement to show a return ticket. The extension process requires a TM30 form, a passport-sized photo, and a completed form at immigration. Some comments discussed extension policies, indicating different local practices regarding when extensions can be applied for.

If one really is a tourist traveling around staying in hotels etc., and although hotels must always do a TM30 reporting a foreigner staying with them, surely a hotel isn't going to be happy about having to provide a TM30 with signed copies of the owner's housebook and ID CARD for immigration?

No ticket

I've done 2 extensions in the last 2 years, no return plane tickets were asked for.

If I remember right . When you had the 30 day visa and wanted to extend I was told not till about a week before your 30 was up . Was there a reason for that and if so same with the 60 ?
right - as far as I know it can be done anytime you want - the extension is always added to the current expiration

Look at the website of the immigration office you will use.

Along with your TM30 you need a passport size photo, copy of your passport and passport, you will need to fill in another form at immigration when you are there .
what's the difference?.. If my flight is too BKK and leaving from BKK, but I'm traveling to Laos or outside of Thailand before returning back to BKK. How does the Visa work? TIA
I'm not sure I understand your question. What are you asking about? If you're asking about visa on arrival, the difference is you either qualify for one or the other based on your passport. You don't get to decide which one you want.
There is no ETA. There is Visa on Arrival. This is for a specific list of countries that can APPLY for and PAY for a 15 day visa at the airport.
There is visa exempt, which is for a much larger list of countries. These people don't get any visa, they get a visa exempt entry stamp for 60 days.
There is visa waiver, which is a bilateral agreement between countries. This is anywhere from 15-90 days depending on what country your passport is, and is also not a visa.
YOU don't get to choose. You qualify for one of them.
