TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler from the Maldives faced confusion at an airport in India when their airline requested proof of a visa for entry into Thailand, despite Maldives being a visa-exempt country. Comments clarified that as a Maldives passport holder, the traveler does not need a visa and suggested showing appropriate documentation from the Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the airline staff. After some discussion regarding requirements for airlines and proof of onward travel, the traveler successfully arrived in Bangkok.

airlines should stop doing this . i have seen reports from many especially during Covid of people being denied boarded without the correct information. The airlines should be held accountable and should face criminal prosecution. People lose money, time and often a visit to family.

the problem is, if the airline flies you to a country and you are denied entry, they have to fly you back at their expense

For example here in Finland (one of the strongest passports) the embassy informs the flight has to be straight from Finland to Thailand or the ticket has to show the route from Finland. So I guess the airline thinks you mighn't allowed to enter.

The airline is messed up then . They shouldn’t have allowed you to book a ticket without a Visa . I’d put the balls in their court and Thailand will issue you a 30 day visa plus 15 days . Their staff need more edu

visa have nothing to do with airlines thats your own responsibility. No airline asks if you have a visa when you book tickets. Good luck chasing an airline because you don't have a visa.

no one said you were dumb, but a visa has nothing what so ever to do with airlines. Not upto them to make sure someone has the right visa.

I wonder if they ( I hope not as it would be a completely incompetent worker) but would there be a chance as they are reading the visa exemption rules and they are seeing India is not on the list...however you are just flying from there and it is not your nationality??

you don't need a visa to travel to Thailand from India. They qualify to purchase a visa on arrival in Thailand.

(Bowing my head in shame and walking backwards to the door)

Are you sure they are asking you for a visa and not proof of onward travel? Most airlines will not let you board your flight if you can't show proof of a flight out of Thailand and don't have a visa. This is a requirement from Thailand that the airline is enforcing.

You can try showing them this page from the Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs which lists all the visa exempt countries.

45 days VOA since 1st Oct? Hopefully Thai MFA info will be updated and reflect that soon.

Jay Tolputt I doubt they'll update that page since the change to Visa Exempt and Visa on Arrival is temporary.

Also Visa on Arrival is not 45 days, it's 30 days.

Visa exempt is now 45 days.
