Can I enter Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption if I only stay for 17 days?

Hi, VISA question.

My wife and I live in Scotland and plan on visiting SE Asia early next year. We have looked at flights and the best option appears to be to arrange return flights from Edinburgh to Bangkok.

Although the flight dates are likely to be approximately 6 weeks apart, and therefore over 30 days, we will only actually be staying within Thailand for no more than 17 days in total. After travelling around Thailand, we are looking at taking a slow boat from northern Thailand into Laos and exploring that country for around 2 weeks prior to flying intoto Cambodia for the last 2 weeks of our trip. We will then fly from Siem Reap back to Bangkok to catch our flight back home.

My question is: Will we be able to go on a 30 days visa exemption due to fact we are actually staying in Thailand for less than 30 days or do the authorities just look at the flight dates and insist on the 60 days VISA? I have emailed the Thailand Embassy in London asking the above question but just received a generic response providing a link to the Thai visa website, so fairly unhelpful.

I can’t find any similar queries on this site or on that web page and therefore hoping that someone has been in similar circumstances in the past and can advise the correct situation as far as VISA requirement(s) are concerned

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired whether they could enter Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption, as their stay will not exceed 17 days despite their return flight being scheduled for over 30 days from their departure. Community responses suggest that as long as they have proof of leaving Thailand within the 30-day window (like onward travel tickets or hotel bookings in Laos), they should encounter no issues with immigration authorities.

I did it 25 years ago and it was no problem then and now there's the Internet at your fingertips now...more hotels and transportation...you'll get your visa when you land bkk...I thought I'd travel for 6 months, ended doing almost 10 years and I still go back 2-3 times a year.

As long as you have a hotel booked in Laos you will be ok I done it in January and all was good

You'll be fine mate. We have done exactly the same thing

You’ll be fine. You are leaving within the 30 days so just show them your booking for Laos, should they ask (which in my experience, they don’t)

Lufthansa does. Other Airlines also...

I just got back today and I’m on a tourist visa now. No questions or problem

On a 60-D tourist visa, they do not ask. Without a visa, they might, depending which airline.

it's questionable if the airline accepts an intention to leave Thailand via Huay Xai. You cannot book a boat ticket online

critical! He talks about entering visa exempt and then leave Thailand by the boat from Huay Xai in Laos. So for the first leg, he doesn't have a valid onward travel proof within the 30 days of a visa-exempt entry. The airline might request it.

Excellent, thanks

The embassy cannot answer this question. You need to ask your airline. They are the ones that might ask to see proof that you'll be leaving Thailand within 30 days before letting you board your flight.

If they require it then you can Google "onward travel ticket" to rent a ticket for this purpose. Or book your travel from Thailand to Laos and use that as proof of leaving Thailand after 17 days.

as you cannot online book a boat a ticket in advance, from Thailand crossing the bridge and from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, he won't be able to show a proof of onward travel. He will need a "real" one-way ticket out of Thailand with the cheapest carrier to throw away

, thanks for response. I will have proof of various accommodations booked in both Laos and Cambodia. I assume that this would not be suitable evidence?

I cannot guarantee. Some airlines do not accept hotel bookings and train or bus rides as a valid proof of onward travel. if you want to be 100% sure, send an email inquiry to the airline, print the reply and have it on you at the check-in, just in case

and it depends on the airline if they ask. Email them, and print out the reply if positive, and take it to the check in
