TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the ability of Australian passport holders to obtain a visa on arrival in China when entering via Hong Kong. It is noted that while some nationalities may qualify for visa-free entry or transit exemptions, Australians typically need to apply for a visa prior to arrival. Multiple comments emphasize the importance of verifying the latest visa regulations through official sources, such as the Chinese embassy or consulate. Suggestions include obtaining a tourist visa to avoid limitations on travel within China.

China has a transit visa as long as you have a flight out of China booked. You can look into that to get more info

China has a short-stay visa-exemption policy for multiple nationalities at select ports of entry. This is pretty much a 3 day transit visa in most cases. I’d recommend getting a tourist visa if you don’t wanna be limited on your movement around China, it’s very trivial to obtain one. I’ve entered China countless times leaving from Thailand.

Some nationalities, 54 in total, including Aussies, can get a 144 hour visa free exemption on arrival and then you will be limited to a certain area to visit. For example, if you fly into Shanghai, you can visit Shanghai, Zhejiang and maybe Jiangsu (cannot remember offhand). However, you cannot fly back to Thailand directly. You need to fly to a third country, then Thailand. You really need to check a Chinese visa website to make sure there have not been any changes to these rules

You can get a visa free entry currently for some nationalities. You need to check but don’t think it includes an Aussie passport - in which case you need to apply for a visa. 🤷‍♂️

This seems like a very odd place to ask this question. This group is about Thailand. Why didn't you just search Google or check the Chinese embassy website in your country?

point noted, thought there may be a potential problem with an Australian entering from Thailand. Hoping a Thailand expat may have trod this path and could offer some info.
