I'm a Canadian returning to Thailand

Lst time in Thailand one of the ATM machines ate my debit card and I could not get it back from the bank That owns the Atm

My bank will not give me a backup card and using a credit card is very expensive

I see that some people suggest a wise card but they charge 1.75% on each transaction

Does anybody have a solution to how to get money out inexpensively if you lose your debit card

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian traveler experienced issues with ATMs in Thailand when one swallowed their debit card. They seek advice on alternative and inexpensive methods to access money without their debit card. Community responses include recommendations to use bank ATMs, open a local Thai bank account, consider online banking solutions like Wise or Revolut, and bring cash in advance. Several users caution against using standalone ATMs and suggest always retrieving their card before leaving the machine. Additionally, they discuss the options of doing manual withdrawals at bank teller counters and keeping backup cards or accounts.

Open a second and third account at your bank and get debt cards for every account.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful suggestions I appreciate it

don't use the ATMs, go to the bank attendants and get them to do the withdrawal manually ... also saves the 200 baht free I hear.
Paul *******
Take cash or WesternUnion yourself

I use my credit card on a lot of things and my cards don't change extra for international transaction.

Revolut, Monzo, Starling. No foreign exchange fees. All online. Report your old card as lost, get it blocked and new one issued. Remember in Thailand most ATM's issue cash first, then return card.

Bank app with QR code withdraw haven't used my card in almost a year

Your bank should give you a new debit card.

I have 2 banks with a debit card each. Also a good travel credit card shouldn’t charge fees

Can't you open another account in Canada even with another bank, then you can get a back-up card. I use one card topped with low funds and have 2 back-ups. Also bring about $3-5k cash and just store in Hotel safe.

Hmmmm

1...Wise charges less than Canadian banks in all my experiences.

2... preload a credit card with funds and simply go into Thai bank and withdraw from it, you will only need your passport.

3... CASH gets best exchange rate, shop around for best rate at money changers , not banks or SuperRich, but private exchanges.

Good luck

Get a Thai bank account. Then call your Canadian Bank with all the details for the transfer and have your bank in Canada send the funds. I have done this with CIBC and the money was in my Thai bank the next day

Go to the teller inside the bank. They will the transaction using your ATM card. Yes slower than going to a machine as you might have to wait to have your number called... but easy enough. Also NEVER use an ATM that is not at a bank branch. Independently owned ATMs are questionable... and not just here in thailand

AFAIK cardless atm transactions only work with local thai accounts and their apps. Whatever card you bring from overseas can be eaten by then ATM. happened to me too at BKK airport, but a woman from kbank came and opened the ATM after 10 minutes. Another option would be bitcoin/crypto and sell them for thai cash locally. No limit in cross border transfer.

This happened to me one time and the bank could retrieve it. I never reported a missing card so I could access on line banking. Transferred funds to my visa card and only pulled money from machines attached to a bank. I eventually opened a Thai bank account and use Wise to transfer funds. I needed to be in Canada to set up my Wise account. It was a very good decision.

Wise might charge 1.75% but I bet a much better exchange rate than your Canadian bank offers.

Bring cash and exchange once in Thailand

Well bring cash, credit cards, debit card and between them all you should be fine.

It doesn't need to. Put 50,000 baht away in safe keeping and use your debit card normally. If something happens you have the backup money.

Take cash, give it all to your GF as soon as you arrive and change it periodically at a booth, it'll be safer with her than any bank.

I implenented your advise some 49 years ago and have money today due to that decision.

She was Thai Chinese who grew up poor and was far better than a bank in hanging on to money. . Lost her to a heart attack after 31 years of her being my banker /wife.

Open thai bank account.

Get bank card .

Download banking app.

Always best to have 2 different thai bank accounts .

I have KTB and Bangkok bank..

Have ATM cards and have banking apps on my phone.

Most transactions can be done via your phone via prompt pay , scanning QR code and bank transfer.

I use a company called Wise to transfer money to my thai banking.

Very simple .

I'd like to do that but I'm just traveling on a tourist Visa and I'm not sure that it would be easy to open a bank account without more longer term Visa

@Myron *********
many people open accounts on tourist visas....do a search for how to open Thai bank accounts for the location you'll be staying at....

try using an agent.

Or just go into a bank like KTB and try.

Open a Thai bank account and get an ATM card for the account then transfer money into it via Wise. If the ATM eats your card or you loose it, any branch of the Thai bank can issue you with an new card immediately in the branch,

The ATM “ate your card” because ATMs work here the opposite way than in Europe or elsewhere in that they dispense the cash before giving you your card back. It’s an almost automatic reaction to walk away after you have your cash because that’s what you’re used to doing. The fact that you don’t notice that you haven’t had your card back is quite normal because you have your cash and the transaction is complete.

As
@Bra****
mentioned use an ATM at a bank. That way if it does happen you possibly have some chance of going into that branch straight away or the next day and getting your card back - but it’s just a chance. Using a street ATM or one say at a 7-11 you’ve probably got zero chance of getting it back.

How to prevent it in future? Be aware that they operate differently to elsewhere and wait for your card before walking away. If the card isn’t retrieved within a certain timeframe then the machine will “swallow” it to protect it from getting into the hands of others.

@Stuart ********
some ATMs here does eat your card by crashing halfway through the take out-process and not because people walked away to early though. Had this happened to me twice while living here. Like the screen going black or suddenly switch to out of service with my card still in it, while i’m waiting for the cash to come out.

To the OP: is it Easy to open an extra account in your bank? If so, do that and get a card for that account too. If something happens you have a backup card and can transfer funds between the accounts in your online bank or app.

I think there's also some banks that let you do ATM withdrawals without your card, just using their app. You could look into that as well.

Revolut.

unfortunately not available in Canada.

I second this.

I opened a second checking account I got a debit card for, I rarely use both but it works.
Brandon ************
If you're that worried, then only use ATMs that are physically at a bank. Do not use a street ATM. Probably very difficult if not impossible to get your card back if a machine in a mall or the MRT eats your card, but should be easier if you lose it at an actual bank.

I also believe you can do teller withdrawals inside of a bank with an ATM card, but I don't know what the fees involved are.
Kool *******
@Brandon ***********
banks will not give you back any card, debit or CC, that a machine ate. They always assume your home bank had a very legitimate reason for not returning your card.
Sam *******
@Brandon ***********
Actually, I was in Ban Pong and the debit machine or ATM machine ate my card at the bank and they couldn’t retrieve it or wouldn’t retrieve it so I had to get a new one. And yes, it is inconvenient.
