My husband and I have a current OA visa which we obtained in our home country. I understand that if we leave Thailand before the visa expires, the IO will stamp us in for another year extension. Can we do this using a land crossing or do we have to arrive by air?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The community confirms that you can extend your OA visa by exiting and re-entering Thailand at a land crossing, as long as you return before your current visa expires.

and it goes without saying it's NOT the leaving thailand that gets you the entry stamp for a whole new year, it's the stamping back IN to the country before your O-A visa expires.

You can use land crossing.

Are you in your first year of the O-A ?

You do not have a recently issued re-entry permit. In the first year of an O-A Visa the ability to exit Thailand and reenter is built in to the Multi-Entry aspect of the first year of the O-A Visa

And make sure the Immigration Officer enters the correct permission to stay date when reentering Thailand.
