TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the ability of Phuket Immigration to cancel a DTV visa and issue a Non Immigrant O visa for retirement. Responses indicate that Phuket Immigration does not cancel DTV visas; instead, cancellation must be carried out through the embassy or consulate that issued the visa. This can be followed by exiting and re-entering Thailand for a new Non-O visa application or obtaining a Non-O visa through a nearby Thai consulate.

it seems like, along with DTV Extensions, local Thai Immigration Offices just don't want to deal with DTV's, as, technically, there is a provision to Convert (Change of Visa Type) from DTV to another type of Visa

@Dca ****
sure doesn't seem like they want do to it

I have heard of NO successful 'conversions' from a DTV to any Non-Imm visa type in country

I asked the same thing at the immigration office in Bangkok out at Chaengwattana Section J (where they do DTV extensions) and they said the same answer. They cannot cancel a visa as those are issued by the embassies/consulates thru the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office.

You could try to contact the MFA office in Bangkok OR the embassy you got the visa from.

Believe it or not I was told that if you get the MFA/Embassy to cancel the visa and you're IN thailand you're allowed to stay until the 180 day entry stamp you have runs out. They told me that cancelling the visa doesn't negate your admitted until stamp, 😮 just means you can't use the visa to enter again. 🙂

Best of luck with it

This was a question I did not know the answer to so I consulted with one of the Phuket Immigration Volunteers (
@Stuart ********
).

He said that they do NOT cancel DTV's at the Phuket Immigration office 😮

Instead you contact the embassy/consulate you got the DTV thru and they cancel it in the system.

Then you do one of two things;

either exit/re-enter to come in free stamp and apply for the 90 day Non-O thru the immigration office from that

OR

exit and buy a 90 day Non-O visa from a thai consulate in a nearby country thru the online eVisa portal then come in on the 90 day stamp from the Non-O.

Thanx Stuart for the info..

rather than cancelling a DTV will any of them do the conversion to another visa type as per the original DTV official announcement? Just wondering why anyone would want to cancel rather just convert?

OptimisticFrog7497 as
@Dca ****
posted when the DTV was rolled out it was supposed to be able to be "converted" to Non-Immigrant Type visas inside the country.

BUT

I haven't seen anyone report that they've successfully done it and this visa has been out since July 2024 😮

You can certainly GO to your immigration office and ask them, print out the paper that
@ ********
a posted in their comment and show it to your immigrations, see what they say. That's the only way you're going to find out for sure

An in–country DTV conversion might be as elusive as getting that in–country O–X 2nd 5 years of that 10 years

There are regulations for it, but, in reality, just haven't had anyone actually get it

@Dca ****
I was almost gonna reference that OX in country extension 😛

No matter what the announcement said
@John *********
i have never seen nor heard of anyone successfully converting a DTV to any other visa in country.

@Tod ********
I wonder if anyone has ever tried just filling out a TM86 and handing it over?
Tod *********
@John *********
you mean show up with the bank letter, statement, updated bank book, TM30, copies of your passport data page, visa, entry stamp, and a filled out TM86 change of visa application?

I mean if you showed up with ALL that stuff ready to go, (and the print out Dca Dca posted) it'd be interesting to see what they'd do
John **********
@Tod ********
exactly. Turn up with everything and give it a go. I've never seen anyone saying they've been refused the conversion but then again I don't know if anyone has ever tried.
