Hi. Happy new year! 🥳 I have a visa question for a friend. He is an Iranian with ED visa and currently studying at a private language school in Thailand. He also just got accepted into a master degree program in Thailand for environmental studies. For this new program, he will get a new education visa to study two years master program. He is from Iran. Can he change his current language related ED visa to a new ED visa for the master program while he is still in Thailand or does he need to leave Thailand and come with the new ED visa? I read somewhere that unlike tourists visa, ED visa cannot be changed to a new visa and the person need to leave the country to get new visa. Appreciate any information.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Iranian student currently holding an ED visa for a language school in Thailand may be able to switch to a new ED visa for a master's program without leaving the country, depending on his visa status. If he is on the original 90-day ED visa, he must leave Thailand to apply for a new visa. However, if he is on an extension based on education, he might be able to change to the university without leaving by coordinating with both schools and immigration offices and obtaining necessary documentation.

He wouldn't be changing any visa because he already has ED.

The biggest thing is if he's on the original 90 day ED visa, or if he's on an extension of stay based on education. If the last stamp in his passport says "extension of stay" then he's on an extension. If that's the case he "might" be able to change to the university without leaving Thailand. He will need to ask his school and ask his immigration office if they will allow him to change his extension from the language school to the university. He would need to get a letter from his language school advising the last day of study and then cancel his existing extension and then at the same time apply for a new extension based on the new school. He will need all the paperwork required from the school in order to do this. If it's 2 different immigration offices then he'll have to coordinate between the schools, and both immigration offices and ask if they will all cooperate.

If he's still on the initial 90 day ED visa then there's nothing he can do. He will need to leave Thailand and apply for a new visa.
