Can I work remotely in Thailand with a Non-O visa?

Hello all, I'm shortly moving to Thailand and currently have a non-o visa due to my wife's job. I'm now considering if it would be possible to continue my current UK based full remote project management role from Thailand. Thankfully my employer is happy but I'm unsure about work permits.

It appears I have a few options to allow legal working

- DTV - is not available yet and only last 180 days

- LTR - not sure I will meet the conditions

- Use a POE service which appears expensive but can assist securing a non-b visa.

Does anyone have experience of a PEO service, are they legal?

Am I missing any other options?

Thanks all

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is moving to Thailand with a Non-O visa due to their spouse's job and is considering options for working remotely while there. They are unsure about the legality of working remotely under their current visa and are exploring options like the DTV, LTR, and using a PEO service for a Non-B visa. Comments suggest that the LTR visa is the only one explicitly allowing remote work, while some advise to work without disclosing it. Others share experiences with EOR services to obtain a work permit.

I will be using a company called 'Shelter Global' as an EOR and getting a Non Imm B visa with work permit. Just started the process so it's not been approved by immigration yet, but I know people that use them with no issues. Comes with a cost but check them out and see if that would maybe work for you :)

that's interesting, why did you choose to go down that route? Does it matter if employee or a company owner?

Best of luck getting approved..

I am going down that route because even tho my work is completely remote, I do want to work legally while in Thailand. We are moving to Thailand in November and while my husband is retired, I still want to run my own business and continue to work and I do not want to do that illegally. Through Shelter I will have a visa that allows me to stay as long as I wish and a work permit that allows me to work legally and my husband will get the Non-O attached to my Non-B. It's the only way I could find that allows me to stay AND work in the Kingdom.

most people do this type of thing for the visa, not the work permit. This is how they get their ability to stay in Thailand. You don't have that problem, so I don't really see any benefit to you pursuing it.

I am doing it for the work permit - I could come on a retirement visa no problem, but that wouldn't solve the work permit issue.

but a work permit is for specific work for a specific company. You're still skirting the law using a company like this for a work permit. So why go through all the trouble when you could just work remotely and keep your head down? If all of your work is online for a foreign company for foreign clients, there isn't much point.

I am doing specific work for a specific company - my company. I really do not want to work illegally and feel much better with this option :)

"- DTV - is not available yet and only last 180 days" is supposed to last 5 years. But only 180m days per stay. So after 180 days you have to leave the Kingdom and reenter.

interesting, so I could have a nice trip to Loas every 180 days? That does not sound too challenging.

That is what we know at the moment. But it might be it has some strange/absurd requirements to acquire. Look for example at the LTR visa.

don't you worry about this visa - it hasn't been introduced, yet, and maybe that won't even happen

tbh I hope it is introduced, it would be a good option for me.

The only visa that explicitly gives you permission to work remotely in Thailand is the remote worker LTR.

Otherwise you're probably better off doing what everyone else does. Continue working remotely and don't advertise the fact that you are. If no one knows, nothing will happen.

@Brandon ***********
Half correct. You obviously can work on a NON B visa with work permit remotely. But an LTR visa does not require an "extra work permit"/
Brandon ************
@Angelo **********
You cannot get a work permit for remote work. So it's not an option. You can only get a work permit for Thai companies.
Angelo ***********
@Brandon ***********
Obviously you can get a work permit for remote work. I make my BOI company, get a work permit. Ooops. Does not matter if I work remote or not. LTR visas are all about remote working. I can work for another BOI company and get a work permit for remote work. And there is the new upcoming visa ... Every European company can organize a NON B visa for me and a work permit, and I work remotely.
Brandon ************
@Angelo **********
a European company CANNOT get you a work permit in Thailand. Only companies registered in Thailand can apply for work permits.
Angelo ***********
@Brandon ***********
That is wrong.

@Angelo **********
the application for a work permit specifically requires a Thai employer ID number.
