Hello, looking to come to Thailand and do some remote work. But, I'm confused about Visas.

There are plenty of guys on YouTube, like this guy earning money in Thailand and even saying to use some sort of Education visa to do it. Is it the right path for me?

So, one of them is 'Dan the Man' or 'Just Dan' and he has videos saying to get an ED visa and then work in Thailand....I just don't know what do to. Is this right for me?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion highlights the complexities of working remotely in Thailand under various visa types, particularly the Education (ED) visa. While some YouTubers advocate using the ED visa for remote work, it's emphasized that legally, any work done in Thailand, including online jobs, requires a work permit. There's a distinction made between working for foreign companies versus those registered in Thailand, with advice suggesting remote work is permissible as long as income isn’t from a Thai entity. Generally, for long-term stays or serious remote work, exploring the new 10-year LTR visa may be beneficial if the applicant qualifies.

I believe as long as you have a revenue generated from work done in Thailand (regardless of whatever job it is), legally you would need a work permit.

All work in and from Thailand requires a work permit issued by the Department of Labor. There is a new 10 year LTR visa that is administered by the Board of Investment, but applies to those who either work remotely for a “substantial company” (publicly traded or $50M in revenue/annum), or who are highly skilled as defined by the BOI regulations. If you might qualify it’s worth checking out on the BOI/LTR website. Otherwise you may consider working for a Thai company and obtain a work permit and Non-B visa through that entity. I appreciate that you’ll get advice that enforcement for those working remotely is difficult and hit or miss, the consequences can be troubling if you intend to make Thailand your long term home. Best of luck to you, and here’s an article on the LTR program:

Just make sure you don't get paid from a company registered within thai borders. Remote work is fine on any visa.

It's a strong grey area.

Technically you need a work permit and work allowed visa to do any work at all in Thailand. Those laws were written in the 50's and haven't really been updated since.

No one actually cares if your work and income are coming from online/another country. Whatever method you can use to stay in Thailand legally, and then mind your own business and do what you need to do, should be fine.

Just remember you can't do any work in Thailand, not even volunteer work, without a work permit. No helping a buddy out at their bar, etc.
