Can I work online while on a Muay Thai visa in Thailand?

Dec 16, 2024
Would it be possible to get a Muay Thai visa, pay for the course, and then still do some work online while we are in Thailand? Does the visa specifically state it is for work or for play or study, and if we work at the same time would we get in trouble? Or do all the visas look the same? I may want to work to fund my life in Thailand as I study at the same time? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the possibility of working online while on a Muay Thai visa in Thailand. While some commenters suggest that with a tourist visa (DTV), online work for non-Thai companies may be permitted, others clarify that the Muay Thai visa explicitly prohibits employment and may lead to trouble if violated. It is advised to consider applying for a digital nomad visa if online work is essential during your stay.

DTV is a tourist visa, you don't need any permission to work online, you can work online for non Thai companies on any visa or no visa

That's not strictly true. All work is illegal without a permit, but since the world modernized, Thailand didn't really have laws about online work. Now things are changing, and people will be we expected to have some kind of work visa, hence this new visa.

Anonymous participant of course it is true! No one ever got a problem working online. DTV is a long term tourist visa nothing else. As no visa gives you permission to work only a work permit. As long you are not working for anything/anyone located in Thailand, Thai state has nothing to say. No country in the world gives a permission to work online. But all the trolls here

Say Thailand does. Why people posting here lies without any knowledge or education about laws?

I've followed this topic for many years. Technically, you are not supposed to work online, but they don't really know how to enforce it. The DTV is a way to make things more acceptable. Sure, there haven't been busts, although some dudes teaching English online were once busted, and cops once shutdown a co-working space in Chiang Mai.

Anonymous participant But more to the question, does the DTV specifically say what you can and can't do?

I've only seen one which had "Workation" in the remarks. So I assume most are all the same.

Oh ok. Does it say "work prohibited"? It seems some do, and some don't. I am guessing that a lot of people who spend five years in Thailand, or even 2.5, will need to work to fund their lives. I'm just confused about this. It's not clear.

They all say employment prohibited even the ones issued for online work. So unless it says in the remarks what it was issued for, then there is no way of knowing.

Anonymous participant it doesn't matter because online work doesn't count as work and never has. Unless your clients are Thai .

Yes, but imagine you worked online all year. You'd have to do your taxes, and maybe the authorities could get funny that you work and don't have the right visa. Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but strange things can happen in Thailand when someone wants to make a point.

Anonymous participant you're overthinking it. You can work online on any visa.

There's always going to be busybodies that say otherwise but Thai authorities don't care about online work.
