I just received my new passport. I plan to do my extension of stay 3rd week of April. Can I wait to do both at the same time, passport transfer and retirement extension of stay?

TLDR : Answer Summary
You can delay the transfer of your passport stamps until you apply for your retirement extension of stay. While there is no immediate penalty for not transferring your stamps right away, it is advisable to do it as soon as possible. However, be prepared to explain the delay to immigration officials when you apply for the extension.

You can wait until then if you want. There is no direct penalty if you don't transfer your stamps immediately, while you are supposed to do asap.

You might be grilled by IO about taking such a long time to transfer. Eventually, they proceed with your application, anyway.

the old passport will have been cancelled when the new one was issued, so the previous date of expiry should be moot

You're correct; the passport is invalid, however the visas and stamps are still valid inside the passport. A foreigner can go to the immigration office and request the valid stamps to be transferred from the invalid passport to the valid passport.

I'm not sure what you mean. The old passport was cancelled. Is that a problem waiting until April to get the stamps transferred to the new passport?

no the passport was issued by your government the stamps by other governments and they have separate validity.

my wife used a visa in a passport that expired 8 years previously but the visa was still good

I still have 11 months left. I got a new passport so I will receive a 12 month extension in April and not 10 months. Thanks

I changed mine in CW Bangkok it took nearly all day , so I would do it before if you are doing it there.
