TLDR : Answer Summary
The question is whether it's possible to use a letter from a friend who is hosting you in Thailand instead of a hotel booking when applying for a tourist visa. Various comments suggest that for a standard 60-day tourist visa, this approach may be acceptable. One user mentions that they've successfully used invitation letters for visa applications and that their host reported the stay to immigration as required. However, it's noted that visa acceptance may vary depending on the visa type, and specific details should be disclosed for precise guidance.

It's impossible for us to give you advice without knowing the type of visa because it could work for some but not for others.

Just remember, just as a hotel must do, the person you're staying with must report it to immigration within 24 hours after you arrive, the same as a hotel is required to do.

If you are applying for standard 60-day tourist visa, it shouldn't be a problem at all. Im a Thai and I have been writing invitation letters with proof of accommodation for my husband (then as a friend) many times. We never book hotel even once. Never have issues with Visa on Arrival or normal visa. Your friend might get a call from immigration for verification tho.

Btw, apart from letter, your friend should also provide the following:
- copy of ID card
- copy of house registration doc / will be best if your friend own the house or act as house master
- house map
- don't forget to include contact number in invitation letter
