Hi, I am Nepali citizen. I am planning to travel to thailand on second week of Dec. for this, i have already obtained Visit Visa in my nepali passport. as the validity of my passport was less than 6 months, i renewed my passport. while getting new passport from Kathmandu passport office, they put stamp of "CANCELLED WITHOUT PREJUDICE" in my old passport, on which, Visa is granted.

My new passport also contains my old passport number in second page.

can i travel to thailand by carrying both passports?

or do i need to transfer my visa to new passport?

please suggest. if visa can be transferred to my new passport at Bangkok airport itself?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is a Nepali citizen with a Visit Visa in an old passport that has been cancelled, seeking advice on traveling to Thailand with both old and new passports. Comments suggest that carrying both passports is generally acceptable, and that entry can be gained with the visa in the old passport. It's recommended to check with the Nepalese and Thai consulates for the possibility of transferring the visa to the new passport.

Only Thai immigration can cancel your visa. The fact your old passport has been cancelled simply means it cannot be used for travel but it can be used to gain entry to a country and you have a valid visa. The only trouble is does the IO know this

I just got back from Kathmandu 🙏🏻 this has happened to me before. What the Consulate should be able to do is transfer the visa to your new passport. This would be the Nepalese Consulate in Kathmandu I would think? You should go and check with them, and then the Thai consulate who may or may not be of much help. It very much varies from Consulate to Consulate around the world. I hope this helps 🙏🏻

Well, I must admit his timing is a bit strange, first arrange a visa an then a new passport 🤷‍♂️ In the expression "better safe than sorry" it would be best to ask the Thai Embassy/consulate in his country.

probably just the way it panned out. Especially if he doesn’t travel much out of the country and didn’t know about the 6 months. I only found that out as it happened to me but that was 20+ years ago

@Chris *****
there is no Nepalese Consulate in Kathmandu. You are referring to the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu? Only THEY can issue a tourist visa bearing the numbers of the new passport

@Gr**
I meant whichever department in Kathmandu he is referring to where his pp was issued. I have had to do a couple of times, been living in Thailand since ‘92 so all kinds of fun and games on the visa and passport front
Chris ******
And definitely bring both passports, “normally” if you don’t have a valid visa you won’t be allowed on the flight from Kathmandu. But it appears only your passport has been “cancelled” not your visa

@Chris *****
Transfering Visa in this case is of no use. The "transfering visa" thing is can be usefull when you have a long term of stay visa but most of the times this concerns a "1 year extension of stay", so no visa anymore.

not been my experience the past 30+ years but things may have changed

@Bis****
not sure if Nepali Citizens get visa on arrival or not? You would need to check
Greg ***********
@Chris *****
Nepali citizen can either buy a 30-days visa on arrival ath the BKK airport, or apply for a 60+30 Days tourist visa beforehand. He worded his tourist visa wrongly calling it "visit visa"

@Greg **********
Visa on Arrival is for 15 days (not 30).
Chris ******
@Gr**
thanks for that, I thought he would be entitled to visa on arrival-
@Bis****
- take note - not sure how long you are planning on staying here
Greg ***********
@Chris *****
on a tourist visa, he will be able to stay the usual 60 days, and is entitled to one 30-days touristic extension on Immigration for a 1900.- THB fee

@Greg **********
extension would be 7 days only. Actually it's a denial of extension but you can still stay 7 days more before you have to leave the country

the usual then

Normally showing 2 passports is okay. Y'r entry stamp will be stamped in y'r new passport. So when you leave Thailand, you only have to show y'r new passport. BUT keep them both ofcourse. Y'll never know.

Best to check at the relevant embassy.

Go back home

do you realize how hypocritical for a non Thai citizen to tell someone to go home ? You do not know this man nor are you Thailand's gatekeeper.
