Hello, I would like to travel to Cambodia by land, get out of Thailand with my Romanian passport and get in Cambodia with my French passport (and come back to Thailand with my French passport too). I do not think there should be any issues with it, but in case anyone has done it before (used 2 passports for this kind of travel), could you please advise if this works well? Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus from users is that switching passports at land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia is not advisable. It is generally accepted to switch passports when flying, but land borders typically do not allow presenting different passports for exit and entry, which can lead to complications with immigration authorities. It's recommended to use the same passport for both exiting Thailand and entering Cambodia.

I have tried to do this and can confirm that you CAN NOT do it. You can 'passport switch' by air to and from most countries, including between Thailand and Cambodia, but it is not possible by land. So if you need to passport switch for whatever reason, you need to fly.

Thank you, Liam! This is super helpful!!! :)

Larisa GL, you CANNOT change passports from different countries at land border crossings, <-meaning you can't stamp out of thailand on one passport and then present another passport to the immigration people in the bordering country for entry. They don't allow it.

You CAN do it when you fly in to other countries BUT not by land that I am aware of.

It says you can get an E-Visa or buy a visa on arrival at the border

Tod, I am trying to figure out if I can make a visa at the Cambodian border as a Romanian national and different websites say different things. I understand this group is a Thai (not Cambodian) visa group 😁 but if you know any reliable websites explaning the Cambodian visa rules, please let me know. Thank you very much! 😁

the overstay rules for kids are the same whether you exit by air or by land. Kids under 15 can't be fined for overstay and kids under 18 can't be banned for it.

Thank you! Yeah, I remember travelling in Europe by land and they have the same rule...:) Thanks for your help, Dan! Also, I have another question for you: I have 2 children and then are always in overstay but because they are French nationals they never had to pay any penalty and never had any issues with it when travelling by AIR. Are the overstay rules regarding the children visas and overstay in Thailand the same when travelling by LAND? I do not wanna get in trouble when arrived at the boarder there. Thank you very much for your time! :)

i guess its a trip to horrible chaengwattana then

then I would take the letter from your consulate along with both passports to the immigration office and get the stamps transferred. That's the 'official' way to get them moved then you'll only need your new passport after that when you go to Savannakhet.

It's free to transfer stamps at the immigration office BTW..

@Tod ********
yes, i have a 30 extension after visa exempt.
Tod *********
@Scott *********
, how it is risky?

IF you're still on the original 30 day entry of your visa exempt stamp just go to the border with both passports. There's no risk in doing that at all.

It's only IF you got a 30 day extension off a tourist visa or a 30 day visa exempt entry that you're supposed to get the stamps transferred at the immigration office before exiting thailand.
Scott **********
@Tod ********
that's a bit of a risk

@Scott *********
, have you gotten a 30 day extension on the 30 day visa exempt entry? In theory IF you're on an extension you're supposed to go to the immigration office and get the stamps transferred.

However in practice I've heard of people just taking both passports to the border and they'll note in the new passport you entered on the old one and then stamp you out on the new one.

@Tod ********
just a simple border hop, visa exempt or what ever it is
Tod *********
@Scott *********
what type of visa or entry stamp are you on now
Scott **********
Does this apply when your leaving on a renewed passport, I've just received a new one and wanted to go to savankhet, can I just leave with both or do I need to get it restamped beforehand
Vasile **************
Don't do it. If you plan to re-enter Thailand keep it simple and do not complicate your situation. It is very easy to get a new visa anywhere outside Thailand if you don't give them a reason to think

There may be trouble ahead

Greg Lewis where is 3 i just counted 2 .

You will be demanded to proof how you arrived in Cambodia at Thai immigration.

Hence it will not work.

Many have tried.

I dont think you'll be able to change passports at a land border, only by air.

@Larisa ***
then me i cant help you with advice . But you can give the answer after you cross :) go there and exit Thailand then explain to Cambodian officer that you want to entry on french pass then i think will be no issue .

Safe travel 😉

from what I know there is no e-visa required. I also know that the only rule in this kind of situation is to enter and exit a country with the same passport so the entry and exit stamps are in the same passport. Logically there should be absolutely no issue at all in this kind of situation, especially when travelling by air, but by land, from what I know, the rules may change because of the local "weird" land borders between Thailand and Cambodia...
Sebastian ************
@Larisa ***
yes could be an issue . Because i guess they will question how you get in the neutral border and again i think you will show them both passport and ask for stamps on your french one . ( Then you let me know how it worked 🙂)

Is there no e-visa need for Cambodia ?

Because if you need the e-visa then you explain that you applied for Cambodia visa based on french passport 🤔

OK got it! Thank you!!

Cambodia entry. I am not sure.

Thailand entry , by land, you will have to show that you been stamped out of the neighbor country before entering Thailand.

Yes. By air is not an issue. By air, traveling to various countries, there be no stamps at all, such as Hong Kong.

are you sure they will deny the entry in Cambodia if they do not see the stamp out of Thailand in my French passport? I know that when travelling by air this is not an issue, but was wondering if the rules change when travelling by land...
Tan ************
Then no issues then.
Sebastian ************
@Tan ***********
that what she said she will entry on french passport then back to Thailand on french passport .

( Even that previously few days before was on a romanian passport in Thailand )
Tan ************
The Thai land border control would prefer you to use the passport you entered Cambodia. They will insist on seeing the visa stamped on the passport. Otherwise they will deny your entry.
Sebastian ************
@Larisa ***
i assume that once you come from Cambodia it will be no problems for Thai .

But questions it will be before entering in Cambodia . Nothing to do with Thailand as you are getting out legally 😉

@Sebastian ***********
I see, I have heard about it too. And it is not an issue.
Sebastian ************
All i know is that if you had a 30 days entry on your french passport you get by land only 15days

And you get 7 days on romanian one if previously had the one for 15day

This was explained to me last year by emigration officer in Bkk airport
