TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the process of quitting a job in Thailand while managing visa and work permit obligations. It's advised to always inform your employer when quitting to avoid future complications. The work permit must be canceled at the Ministry of Labor, after which you may need to visit immigration to handle your extension of stay, especially if on a Non-Immigrant B visa. It is important to follow these steps correctly to prevent issues when seeking employment with another company in Thailand.

This is how you cancel a work permit.

Firstly, the ministry of labor don't inform immigration. I stopped work once and handed in the WP, as there was 11 months left on the visa, I didn't go to immigration. When getting a new wp a couple of years later, I had to go to the local police station and pay a fine of 1500 baht. Everyone told me I had 7 days to leave the country, but not true.

Only an immigrating officer can cancel your visa.

I was on a yearly extension. Maybe things have changed. Like I said, it cost me 1500 baht fine..just sharing my experience.

, actually you're a little off base. NO ONE can cancel a valid visa :/ If you stop work and cancel your work permit BUT are on a valid VISA it doesn't cancel, and you can stay until it expires

BUT

If you are on a yearly extension of stay (where you do 90 day reporting) you need to take the receipt of canceling your work permit and documents from your company and go cancel the extension of stay.

Failure to do that will cause you grief down the road if you're ever gonna work again here.

IF you ever are gonna wanna work here again, you need to cancel your work permit and extension of stay by the book or it's gonna come back and bite you when you go to get them again with another company.

1 - go cancel your work permit

2 - take that receipt and documentation from your company and go cancel your extension

3 - leave the country.

@St***
, You would need to inform them because you'll need documentation from your employer to cancel your extension of stay at the immigration office.

One more thing Robert, Can I do this w/out informing my employer or it would be best to inform them first hand. ๐Ÿค” I didn't sign any contract w/ them after working for them for 4 years. Was there any case that they might not give my salary even if I will try to do it properly like I will work for them for 1 more month so they can find someone to replace me.

Robert Lagas I cleary understand., Big thanks to you Sir Robert., I will finalize this properly..

You cancel the work permit first at Ministry of Labor, than with the documents you visit Immigration to cancel your Extension of Stay. That means you have to leave the country the same day, if you want to stay inside Thailand you have to apply for a new Extension of Stay if this is not approved you will get the 7 days Extension to leave the country at the cost of 1.900 Thb.

@Robert ******
so should I cancel my work permit first in dindaeng or visa first in chaengwattana? and After I cancel it, do you think the immigration will allow me grace for 7 days or even letting pay for 1900 for 7 days extension?
Robert *******
So that means you're on an Extension of Stay. This has to be cancelled by yourself at your local Immigration Office on the same day as your Work Permit.

@Robert ******
It is my first 90 days report., I will go to chaengwattana.
Robert *******
And where do you show up? Every 90 days at the border to cross into another country and back into Thailand or every 90 day at the Immigration Office to do the 90 days report. As I replied before: a Visa stays valid, an Extension of Stay needs to be cancelled, so look in your passport and explain, if you want to have the correct advice.

Base on my understanding. soon as the work permit is cancelled, it will automatically canceled the visa on my passport. Can I possibly cut it first in the immigration an apply for 7 days extensions then cancel my work permit. or really have yo surrender my working permit first?. what If I cancel my work permit first, will I still be able to apply for 7 days extension.
Robert *******
Personally I would always inform the company that I quit the job. You can hand in your Work Permit at the Ministry of Labor and than If: You are on a Non Immigrant B visa (sticker from Embassy or Consulate) it stays valid and can be used till last day of Enter Before Date on the Visa Sticker OR if you are on an Extension of Stay (Stamp from local Immigration) you have to visit Immigration on same day as turning in your WP to cancel this Extension and apply for a new Extension. If you do not meet any requirements you will get the Application not approved stamp and 7 days to leave the country.
