I’m an American currently in Thailand trying to get a non O retirement visa using the 65000 baht per month requirement. I cannot get a thai bank account until I get the initial 90 day visa. Immigration won’t give me the visa without a thai bank account. I’m told to get the visa in Laos but was told I need my proof of income certified by U.S. consulate in Bangkok but they haven’t certified the last several years. HELP
Summary so far
The user, an American in Thailand, is struggling to secure a Non-O retirement visa due to the requirement of having a Thai bank account, which he cannot set up without the visa. Several commenters explain the complexities surrounding this situation. Key points include that one cannot obtain the initial visa or extension in Thailand based on the monthly income method without prior bank account setup. It is suggested that traveling to a neighboring country like Laos to apply for the Non-O visa using proof of income from a foreign bank account may be a viable option, without needing U.S. consulate certification. Commenters also discuss the difficulties in opening a Thai bank account on a tourist visa and emphasize the varying policies at different banks.

This is gonna turn into a slow motion train wreck of a post :(

1 - you will not be able to get the initial 90 day Non-visa or the year extension in country using the monthly income by transfer method.. That isn't going to happen

2 - you are highly unlikely to be able to open a bank account on a free stamp or tourist visa entry as more and more banks require a long term visa (Non-O) before they'll let you open the account

3 - you CAN however go to a nearby country (Lao for example) and apply for the Non-O 90 day visa showing proof of funds with your bank account in your country (there's no need to get any US certification or anything, just upload 3 months of your bank statement showing you have the minimum required transferring in or the minimum required banked)

I think I'd rather close this thread than let it go off the rails though I messaged the O/P and will re-open it after

You get your Non-O from a Thai Embassy or Consulate while outside of Thailand using funds in a bank account in your name (either 800k balance or 65k/month income). You use this to enter Thailand (90 days) then get the bank account opened to transfer the 800k to season for your first 12 month extension.

Welcome to the amazing Thai administration :-). Keep trying with the bank account. Sometimes it helps to bring someone Thai vouching that you are a „good person“. Try other branches as well. The managers decide their policy. Bangkok’s ami and SCB seem most promising

Florian Bogeschdorfer he doesn't have a long term visa, so no bank will open an account for him.

Sadly you will ❌ NOT be able to get the one year extension of stay using the 65,000 Thai baht monthly income method...as retired ...from a New Non O Visa applied for inside Thailand.

You need to visit your local Thai Immigration office and ask them for their requirements for the Non O Visa as retired.

And you will have to transfer deposit into a Thai bank account in your name only, 800,000 Thai baht.

Then you can apply for the One year extension of stay as retired.

During that first year, Transfer 65,000 Thai baht monthly for 12 months...then on renewal to obtain a second one year extension of stay as retired, use that 12 MONTHS transfer deposit as PROOF of meeting the requirements for the second one year extension of stay as retired.
