It’s not that it’s law - there has never been been a formal entry into the Royal Gazette - which would codify such as law. it’s largely the banks reaction to their regulator - The Bank of Thailand (BoT) which has substantial power - both overt as stipulated by law, as well as implicit. the BoT has made if clear that they expect banks better “police” who their clientele are (aka KYC or Know Your Customer) and one of the numerous ways fhis has been implemented is by the tightening of account opening standards, facial recognition implementation and submission etc. The bottom line is that rightly or wrongly, those who don’t hold one of the long term visas will have a much harder time opening an account, and if done, may find they run into problems keeping it open longer term.
