So I am exploring the idea of coming to Thailand on a DTV (soft) visa via Muay Thai training. Undecided on where to live, thinking either Bangkok or Pattaya. I have been to Thailand several times and will be coming next year to scout out gyms and neighborhoods. Plan is to come in 2028 as I have obligations for tge next 2 years.

Have one question that I haven't found much info on from searching previous posts.

On a DTV visa will I be able to get a Thai drivers license or will I be able to use my international drivers permit with my US DL? I plan on leasing either a car or motorcycle when I come on my DTV.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering moving to Thailand with a DTV visa for Muay Thai training and is curious about obtaining a Thai driver's license. Comments indicate that it is possible to get a Thai driver's license on a DTV visa and that an international driver's permit is valid for 90 days. After that, a Thai license is typically required by law for anyone staying longer than 90 days, regardless of visa type. Discussions also touch on potential future changes to visa regulations that may affect the DTV visa.

BY Thai law, which some do not recognise, each and every forfeigner who is longer than 90 days in Thailand, need a Thai driving license if they like to drive a motor vehicle.

And this is not depending on how you entered Thailand, like the type of visa used.

An international driver permit is good for 90 days inside Thailand after which you need a Thai driving licence.

They are good for your length of entry stamp.

Tourist exemption 60 days

Elite 1 year

DTV 180 days.

Or your permit expiry date what ever comes first.

90 days is pretty common around the world but Thailands wording of it is different.

I Initial thought the same as you 90 days until I was quietly put in my place on another group with screenshots from the law translated

And then LTR , non immigrant etc is a different story all together from what I remember of the screen shots is they require a Thai license 100% of the time.

Were as all the above in the comment are considered different types of tourist visas

the law refers to 90 days on a non-immigrant visa but that law pre-dates all these new visa types. Good luck with an insurance company honouring anything beyond 90 days

I have a Thai license so you do t need to worry about my insurance.

Insurance requirements are another thing on their own.

Any way it is what it is

You can currently get a DL on a DTV. Bare in mind in 2028 very likely there could be some changes to the DTV.

pardon me Andi, but that's pure speculation on your part without any factual report of any changes in the DTV visa in 2028.

I said "COULD" change I did not give a definitive "will" change. It is reasonable to expect the 2028 application process may differ from today, the same as 2026 application differs from 2024.

completely understand that things change. I will be keeping an eye on things, also have the possibility of doing a retirement visa in late 2028 if things change.

true, if I wanted to work. I happy knowing I never have to work again in my life. I sold my properties, my stocks and my businesses to build a life where I just enjoy life and travel. I plan on using Thailand as a hub location for traveling through Asia for 4 years before moving on to Australia and Oceania.
