How can I obtain a Thai driving licence while on a DTV visa?

Has anyone successfully managed to get a Thai driving licence whilst on a DTV? And if so, could they tell me how (DM me if preferred). Not looking for feedback on the ins and outs or pros and cons, just how to get it done, ideally via an agent to take some of the hassle out of it. Cost isn’t an issue, time is.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a Thai driving licence while on a DTV visa, you will need to visit your local Department of Land Transport (DLT) office. Required documents usually include a doctor's certificate, a residency certificate, your International Driving Permit (IDP), your home country's driving licence, and a passport photo. Some respondents recommend hiring an agent for convenience; agents can help facilitate the process and streamline the experience, typically costing around 2000 to 3500 THB. However, some users suggest that doing it yourself is straightforward and can be completed in about an hour, particularly if you have the necessary documentation ready.

I know but in practice it’s hard if they want a residence certificate and I don’t have one

@Hiren *******
you easily get it from immigration office…….

@Hiren *******
the residence certificate is always required, no matter the visa, and you can easily get it at the immigration office. DTV is no different than any other visa when it comes to drivers license

pass by an agent, they arrange everything

I’m in the same boat. Cost isn’t an object I just want this to be as easy and streamlined as possible.

I have a US valid license with both motorcycle and car certs. Everybody seems to give conflicting advice.

Anyone have any agents who are reputable in Bangkok?

Not the cheapest, but seems to be the most hassle free. Those calling it a scam due to the high cost don't seem to understand that not everyone is looking to everything as cheaply as possible!! I know it is around 400B to do it myself and upwards of 4000B to use an agent but if they get it done, I am happy to pay!

Neighbours wife got her’s immediately for 2,000 baht each (albeit some time ago). DLT might have increased their prices by now.

When I was taking lessons and test for bike a few months ago there were a handful of DTV holders doing same. In Chiang Mai

If cost isn’t an issue then use an agent
Paul *******
FirstNameLastName You don't need an agent. They don't help and are a waste of money and many of them are scams.
FirstNam*********
@Paul ******
he wants a licence and cost is no object so an agent who has a walk in shop will assist In getting the licence easily and quickly, I’m not talking about these online scammers with fb posts offering licences without seeing you
Paul *******
FirstNameLastName Still sounds like a scam. You can easily apply for a Thai license on your own.

FirstNameLastName I’ve gone with cost for convenience, I haven’t got time to stand around all day. I’m aware they’re charging me about 20 times more, but I’d lose more than that if I took the day off work!

@Hiren *******
agents in Pattaya charge about 3000b to guide you through it, it’s around 400-500 to do yourself

I got it for 3500thb through an agent
AuthenticPas************
What scam ? I am not vouching or sharing any leads here just saying i goy mine for 3500 on normal visa not even on dtv. Basically conversion.
Paul *******
@Hiren *******
Still sounds like a scam. Bring a Thai speaker along, better to get it done that way (assuming you believe there won't be any English speakers at your local DLT office).
AuthenticPas************
@Paul ******
yes thai agent
Paul *******
AuthenticPassionfruit644 Better just to bring a Thai person or expat who speaks fluent Thai. An agent isn't needed; very easy to do yourself.
Paul *******
AuthenticPassionfruit644 Sounds like a scam. I got mine renewed on my own, including residency certificate, 2 licenses (car and motorcycle), doctor's certificate, 3 IDPs (all the possible ones you can get) I paid less than what you did and it all took about 2.5 hours.

@Paul ******
I don’t think it’s a scam, it’s just paying for the convenience. I’ve been offered 4500 for the residency permit for example but it’s the least effort one where I barely have to move so I’d go with that. I’m sure many are cheaper but I guess it’s the service I’m paying for.
AuthenticPas************
@Hiren *******
it took me 20 mins including test. Mine was VIP service.
Chris **********
@Hiren *******
you can get the residency certificate for 1000thb from The Colonel Visa service. You don't have to go in person for that.
Chris **********
AuthenticPassionfruit644 can you provide details of the agent? I know people that could use the help, but all the agents they have contacted have said they can't do the licence conversions as it must be done in person.

@Chris *********
I am happy to do it in person, but when I used to live here about seven years ago an agent came with me to do all the Thai things, and I just followed their instructions and did the various testing phases and then passed. I couldn’t have done it on my own because I didn’t speak any Thai at all. I’m not looking for a fraudulent license or for someone else to do it on my behalf, I just want the least hassle way of getting a Thai driving license even if that means simply being accompanied by an agent throughout the process. I have a full UK license so if that can simply be converted that would be ideal, or I can do the actual test properly at the DMV/DLT (with an agent helping me with the admin).
Paul *******
@Hiren *******
You could have because there's always a staff member who speaks English at the DLT. Even if you were fluent in Thai, there would be that one staff member who insists on speaking English with you unless you talk over her in Thai.
John **********
@Hiren *******
Do you have an IDP from the UK? If so the process is straightforward

@Hiren *******
you can definitely get an agent to help you in person. It's a really easy process though, and I don't speak a word of Thai either (I'm trying 😅). I just have my phone out with Google translate a lot, but it was really easy to do in Chiang Mai.

I remember when I did it seven years ago they told me I couldn’t have it because I was colourblind and couldn’t see red and green (I am definitely not colourblind!) so I applied again the month later and suddenly I passed the colour blindness test and was given a license. I wasn’t aware that you could be cured of colour blindness 😂
Chris **********
@Hiren *******
I have a mate that had a similar thing happen with his career. He was miraculously cured of colour blindness and his career took off. Strange 🤣
Pete *******
You get a 2 year license with a DTV from your local DLT office. Documents required are on the website. At Chonburi you can walk in get a document check done then will be given an appointment sometime in the next weeks to return for the eye and reaction tests. After the tests they will print out your license.
Paul *******
@J.P. ********
Not that I know of. I recently went to an office that isn't my local one and that was fine.
Paul *******
@Pete ******
No you don't. You can get a 5 year one at most offices if your eligible except for Rayong and Chonburi
Pete *******
@Paul ******
to get a 5 year license you need a long term visa. A DTV will only get you a temporary 2 year license.
Paul *******
@Pete ******
Nonsense. You can get a 5 year license extension on a DTV at most offices.
Pete *******
@Paul ******
the requirements for a 5 year driving license are published on the DLT website. It requires a long term visa.
Paul *******
@Pete ******
And a DTV visa qualifies in most locations. Don't talk about what you don't know.
Pete *******
@Paul ******
the DTV does not qualify as a non immigrant visa which is required for the 5 year license.
Paul *******
@Pete ******
It DOES qualify. Many members have gotten 5 year renewals on DTVs. Just because it doesn't make you happy, doesn't mean it's not happening. Don't like the DTV? Get another type of visa!
Pete *******
@Paul ******
you obviously live in an alternative reality where facts don’t matter. The official policy of the DLT is you need a Non Immigrant visa for a 5 year license. I refer you again to the DLT website.
Paul *******
@Pete ******
You clearly live in an alternative reality. Most DTV holders have been getting 5 year license extensions. Each office decides on whether to issue a 2 or 5year license. They don't care about your opinion. Clearly, you don't know Thailand well at all.
Pete *******
@Paul ******
as the DTV is not even 2 years old most holders would not yet be up for renewal. Most offices follow department policy. Facts matter.
Paul *******
Pete Power Nonsense. Many DTV holders, most probably, have been living in Thailand on other visas and thus already have existing licenses. Stop making up things to suit your narrative.
Pete *******
@Paul ******
you live in your reality and I will live in mine.
Paul *******
@Pete ******
Your reality isn't an actual reality. It's one you create yourself
Jef ********
@Pete ******
💯 correct ⬆️
Jef ********
@Paul ******
everyone gets 2 years first license even thais
Paul *******
@Jef *******
Duh! Time passes and most people are at the point where they're renewing 5 year licenses. In most locations (except a few such as Chonburi and Rayong) a DTV holder can obtain a 5 year license extension.
Jef ********
@Paul ******
this is a DTV group peanut 🥜. DTV has only been around a year 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

@Pete ******
Do you think the offices outside of Bangkok are easier? I am happy to travel if necessary.
Paul *******
@Hiren *******
Bangkok is the best place and they'll issue a 5 year one (avoid Bang Chak but all other ones will). Chonburi and Rayong are only issuing 2 year renewals.
J.P. *********
@Paul ******
awesome. Do you have to go in the province where your address is or license plates are?
Pete *******
@Hiren *******
they may be quieter and you might get through quicker but the process is pretty standard.
Chris **********
You need a doctor's certificate, residency certificate, your IDP, your home countries licence and a passport photo. You need to go in, an agent can't do this one for you. You need to do an easy reaction time test. Make a booking online so you don't have to wait around all day.
