TLDR : Answer Summary
Expats can obtain a temporary 2-year Thai driving license while on a Digital Thailand Visa (DTV). If you do not have a full motorbike license from your home country, you will need to pass a complete driving test in Thailand. It is recommended to enroll in a driving school for assistance. Required documents include a residence certificate from immigration, a medical certificate, and copies of your passport and TM30. The entire process can be done at a local Department of Land Transport (DLT) office. Some users have successfully converted their home country licenses without needing to take a test, depending on their situation.

I'm going tomorrow for my DL appointment in Krabi(no appointments are available in Phuket until March 2027 😔). I'm converting my home country DL to Thai DL so no test needed and simple documents.

If you don't have a full motorbike licence then you have to do the complete test in Thailand. The easiest is to sign up with a school who will take you through everything then just give you a bit of paper to take to the DLT to get your licence issued

Anonymous participant what is your home country?

In the UK we get to use motorbikes with our driving licence up to 50cc or something (someone can correct me)

I showed the DLT office in Buriram this on the rear of my UK licence and they were more than happy to issue a full motorbike licence at the same time as the driving licence.

Irfy7674 I have an Australia drivers license, I have a feeling it’s the same 50cc rule here but it doesn’t show that on our license..

I mainly want to make sure I’m covered by insurance to drive

Absolutely, you can even get it on a tourist stamp, take a residence certificate from the immigration, medical certificate from any clinic/hospital (just tell them its for DL), make copies of your passport and TM30, schedule the exam and riding evaluation in any DLT, I recommend less touristy areas, so you will spend around 350-500 baht total and will get it in a few days without a queue

Yes. As long as you have a place to stay immigration can give you a paper for it. And you need a healthcheck
