TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation focuses on whether individuals with a DTV visa can obtain a Thai driver's license. While there are differing opinions, several comments clarify that the ability to secure a driver's license is not strictly linked to visa type; some users report obtaining licenses on tourist visas or with little to no requirements in specific provinces like Phuket. However, a residency certificate and a medical certificate are generally required. The situation can vary significantly depending on local regulations and the specific Department of Land Transport (DLT) office.
DTV VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES

Just apply if you're here in Thailand more than 90 days. For us south east Asian countries, we can drive with our home country license
Paul *******
Indonesians also don't require an IDP.
Paul *******
@Andrew ****
ONLY for 90 days and depends on the country of issue. In practice, Cambodians and Vietnamese need IDPs to drive here, whereas Malaysians, Singaporeans, Laotians, Bruneians, Burmese and Filipinos can drive on their home country license provided its in English. This applies to non-nationals who hold licenses issued in these countries as well but again, only for 90 days thus if establishing residency in Thailand you'll eventually require a Thai license regardless of your nationality or the driver's license you currently possess.

I forgot to tell you. Your medical certificate will also be required for this.

@Arvind ******
You offer visa services and you only know about Bangkok. Are you sure you are working legally in Thailand?

Ask the person who arranged your DTV visa to get your residency certificate. Chengwattana immigration will then handle your work.

Driving licence can be applied any type of visa

@Paul ******
I know that, but some of the blanket NO answers are shockingly ignorant. Which is why I stated where I was. There is also no waiting time in Samui unlike Phuket.
Kevin ********
@Arvind ******
Samui I did mine on tourist visa just a few days after arriving. Was a simple process and cost 410baht for medical, car and bike.

I will add, that your incorrect answers will drive business away from you. You answer because you want people to spend money with you, and you are an agent that benefits from the wrong information.

Personally, I think admin should ban people like you who profit from bad advice.

@Kevin *******
It depends on the individual DLT office and what visa you're on. If it's a tourist or visa exemption, you'll generally get a 2 year license easily but a 5 year one usually requires a long term visa or extension.

@Arvind ******
but not everywhere. That’s my point. So for people that go elsewhere your information is wrong. And also why it’s better to ask in local groups as you get accurate relevant information for that location.

@Arvind ******
not true, got it with a METV (multi entry tourist visa)

@Arvind ******
Not true about needing a WP etc. I have friends got full car and bike licenses on Tourist Visas. Who is telling you this nonsense?
Samuel *********
@Arvind ******
not true. It depends on the province.

@Samuel ********
As you wish.

@Arv***
in Phuket you can get a Thai driving licence with no visa. I did it last year on a 30 day visa exempt stamp. I had to get a residency certificate and a medical certificate
Henrik *****
But often there is a 2 month waitinglist to get a appointment at Phuket.
Greg ********
@Alex ******
He only knows Bangkok. To get a Residency Certificate in Bangkok you need to have completed a 90 Day Report.

@Arvind ******
I don’t wish. ☺️

I'm talking about my experience

A lot of these people post about their little view of Thailand and have no idea, as you point out, there are different rules depending on location. They are clueless.
Arvind *******
And work permits

@Htet *********
no sir only non- all type visa and passport and medical certificate and residency certificate
Walter *********
of course not

The two have nothing to do with each other. You want a driver's licence then go to the DLT and follow the requirements.
