Not sure if this has been asked before as I can’t find with search.

If my DTV is approved can I apply do motorbike lessons and get a Thai motorbike licence? I do not have a motorbike licence from my home country as I have never needed one at home.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, if your DTV visa is approved, you can apply for motorbike lessons and obtain a Thai motorbike license. Multiple comments confirm that DTV holders have successfully taken lessons and tests to acquire their licenses. To do so, find a driving school that offers lessons and assists with taking the test at the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Additionally, you'll need a certificate of residence from immigration and a medical certificate to proceed.

You need certificate of residence from immigration (get this with your tm 30 from lodgings)- do this first, as it can take time to process, only at the airport immigration office in the morning, they are closed in afternoon. Get medical certificate. Bring these 2 letters to driving school. Pass the course, then take the passing letter from driving school to department of land transport to get your license.

If you are taking test at driving school then better to let them get both your Medical and Residence Certificate. It will cost only a little more than running around yourself.

Find a school, take lessons, take the test at the school including the multiple answer test and the school will give you a slip to take to the dlt to exchange for a licence

You can obtain a license even on a visa exempt stamp.

There is no visa class restriction on the first 2 year licenses at all.

I didn’t realise this was a possibility. Do you know where this would be possible?

everywhere (as I have ever known) your visa class or even no visa is irrelevant for the initial 2 year license.

For sure Chiang Mai doesnt need any visa, brother did one last year while on a visa exempt.

@Sefton *******
depends where you apply. Some dlt offices will only issue if on a non-immigrant visa

which ones wont issue a driving license ?? Obtaining a residence cert can be difficult in some provinces, in which case you can fall back on getting an embassy letter, but all provinces should issue 2 year licenses to all visa classes.

The 5 year license is a different story, not all offices issue those on a DTV.

Yes. I was on a course about few months ago in Chiang Mai and a handful of DTV holders did it and took their tests. The school made all the test arrangements and gave the pack to get the license smoothly at the DLT.

Yes, you can do it yourself if you have time to study and a waiting list to submit your application,

Or use the services of a company that will help you collect the entire package of documents and get your license without queues within 3 days

The one I used did all of that including Med & Res Cert plus the test at their test centre not DLT. If a person has not ridden a bike though it it a good idea to have some off road practice and then on road too.

I have ridden a bike in samui and other islands but automatic transmission 125cc which is fine for me to get around I just want to have the relevant documents so I can ride in areas with more strict policing and maybe bigger engine

The schools will do this for you too. There were more just taking the test than actually getting lessons. The online test was taken at same school test centre. Basically you are paying for convenience and 100% pass rate.
