TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, expats can apply for a driving license in Thailand on a DTV visa. The requirements include having a residency certificate, a TM30 form, and completion of a 90-day reporting. Additionally, a medical certificate and an International Driving Permit (IDP), along with documents from the home country, are necessary. Some users noted being able to apply even on a tourist stamp, albeit with additional documentation required.

That’s for Bangkok. Most other provinces don’t require 90 day report to get the residence certificate.

Correct, in CM only need TM30, a photo and 60thb for a residency certificate. Can even be done on a visa-exempt stamp.

You can do on tourist stamp.

Requirements are IDP, licence from home country, medical from here, and residents left from immigration.

The letter from immigration requires a TM30, copies of your last entry stamp and main page of passport. And application form.

If you are buying a bike/car you need 2 letters, 1 each for licence and to register vehicle. That is asked for on the application for residents letter.

Simple process took a week to get residence letter, no cost, can pay for expedited. Medical was 100 baht, and licence cost for bike and car was 310 baht and 90 minutes of my time.

Anonymous participant yes, but you have to do a test as well. And if you don’t have an IDP and are here already, then technically you won’t be insured if you have an accident, and could end up with a large hospital bill.

My advice to anyone coming here is make sure they have an IDP from there home country anyway.

They are very easy and cheap to get.

Anonymous participant you need the IDP to avoid the test for the Thai license, once you have that then you only need Thai license anyway 😉

As long as you have IDP etc and do the license within 3 months of entry you are good. The IDP is only good for 90 days. I have a 3 year IDP which is why I did my license straight away on tourist visa.
