Hello, I have two questions. 1) I just received a tourist visa for Thailand in Vientiane. It is for exactly three months. Is there any way this visa can be extended at Chiang Mai Immigration? I’m assuming there is NOT, but I just want to make sure. 2) I want to go to Myanmar via Mae Sai, at the end of those three months for a visa exempt entry. Would a bus ticket to Mae Sai show proof my “traveling on” from Thailand? I am an American citizen, and I want to extend my trip to bring my Thai to a higher level. Thank you very much for your answers. This site is a boon for us all.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The tourist visa allows for a 60-day stay in Thailand, which can be extended by an additional 30 days at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht. After the extended stay, crossing into Myanmar via Mae Sai does not require proof of onward travel for a visa-exempt entry.
That is the validity period, within which you must use it. You'll get a 60-day entry which can be extended 30 more at Thai immigration for 1900 baht. Then you could do a border hop at Mae Sai / Tachilek for a 30-day visa-exempt entry (allowed to do twice per calendar year if by land border). No need to show proof of onward travel in that case.
the above comments are correct. I made the mistake of going to extend at 90 days instead of 60 days and had to pay a HUGE overstay fine. Check the STAMP date, not the one on the actual visa 😊
