TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen can travel to Myanmar to obtain a 60-day tourist visa. To do this, one option is to fly to Yangon and apply for the visa at the Thai consulate for 40 USD. This visa can be stamped for 60 days upon re-entry to Thailand, extendable for an additional 30 days. Alternatively, you can visit the Mae Sai-Tachiliek border, stamp out of Thailand, and then back in to receive a 30-day visa exempt entry stamp, which can also be extended for 30 days at an immigration office.

It takes staying overnight.

You turn in your paperwork and passport in the morning of one day and you get it back with the visa in it the afternoon of the next day.

You can FLY to Yangon and apply for a single entry tourist visa at the thai consulate there for 40USD (they only take US dollars at the consulate).

That visa would get you stamped in for 60 days when you come back to thailand and you could extend it by 30 more days at the immigration office if you needed to for 1900baht.

OR

You could just go to the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of burma (for 10USD or 500baht) then stamp back into thailand to get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp which you could also extend for 30 more days at the immigration office for 1900baht if you needed to.

one last question(2part)... is it just one day or is it longer to get a single entry visa and do we have to have the paperwork before we go to the consulate in Yangon? Just so I book the correct amount of time and if we require staying overnight in Yangon or we can do same day visa and fly right back ;)

for the second choice I mentioned, you need to remember you can only do TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year.
