Answer summary
Yes, you can extend your 30-day visa exemption for another 30 days at an immigration office in Thailand before your first 30 days expire. However, it's essential to ensure you have a valid onward flight ticket to avoid issues with airlines when boarding. Some commenters suggest that applying for a 60-day tourist visa before traveling would be easier and potentially cheaper than handling an extension once in Thailand.

Why would you wait until you’re less than a week away from flying before trying to find out the answer? If you’d applied for a 60 day visa 3 weeks ago, you’d have it by now and not be risking being refused entry because of an overstay.
If you live in Scotland & have a British passport, you can apply online and pay a fee for a 60-day Tourist Visa (officially called a Single-Entry Tourist Visa) before you travel.
Because the standard, visa-free entry for British passport holders is limited to 30 days, applying for this formal visa is the best path if you want to secure a longer 60-day stay right from the start.
John Stephen get a visa so you don’t have any issues. A 60 single entry visa is cheaper than a n extension in Thailand! Why did you wait until it’s too late? You knew or should have known that Thailand changed its exempt entry to 30 from 60 days on September 15. Good luck…
Paul De Graaf I totally agree. I don’t understand why someone would wait until it’s too late to apply for a visa. We all knew that the 60 day exemption was going back to 30 on September 15. If I were going to Thailand I would stay on top of the news before I left to avoid problems.
Too late for apply e visa.. keep in mind.. if you already make a return ticket after 5 weeks.. than make an under 30 days refundable ticket.. and extension will be possible for 30 days.. no issues
If you've not applied for a 60 day visa and you're staying longer than the 30 days visa exempt. Most airline's when checking in ask to see your onward flight on day 30 or may refuse you boarding. It happened to us and had to quickly book a flight whilst in the airport...
The Core Rule for AirlinesEnforcement: If you arrive at a UK check-in desk for a one-way or return flight past 30 days without a valid visa or an onward ticket showing you will leave Thailand within your permitted entry window, the airline will generally deny you boarding.
Paul De Graaf Its not nonsense we stay 3 months and the last 3 yrs we've been asked for onward flight details on day 30 or was 60 at the time. May not happen in Australia or wherever you come from but it does in UK and here in Spain. Let's see what happens when he checks in, he has an onward flight but its after his 30 days. He needs to check with the airline better to be safe than sorry....
John Stephen you need to check with the airline to confirm that they will accept the flight that is after the 30 day visa exemption period. Some airlines will not accept it so ypu might need to book some exit from Thailand within the 30 days and either throw it away or get a refund.
Luc De Clerck they're not really supposed to allow boarding without the correct visa etc and could be liable for repatriation cost. That's a could be, if they're shown by Thai borders to have been negligent. If you ask the airline their likely answer is going to be for their own protection and will be you need a means of leaving Thailand within the time frame. Having said that although I've had the correct visa these last couple of trips I've only booked one way, and haven't been asked for a return itinerary, and I've never been tempted to ask them to ask me. I'm here this time on a permanent basis so I didn't need a return ticket, and the previous two I never had a definite return date. If refused at Heathrow I would simply have booked something online there and then, probably a bus ticket to Ranong,Lankawi or KL as we're not far from Malaysia and Myanmar
I would apply for a single entry 60 day tourist visa online. Only cost around 30 pounds. Cheaper than the extension and saves you time and trouble while you are in Thailand. Here is the official link.
