TLDR : Answer Summary
When arriving at BKK Immigration on a 30-day visa exemption, you cannot apply for the ฿1900 30-day extension immediately at the airport. Instead, you will need to visit an Immigration Office after your arrival to apply for the extension. Alternatively, it may be more convenient to apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa beforehand, which allows for 60 days of stay upon entry, with the option to extend for another 30 days at an immigration office.

I usually do my extension within the first 10 days & as yet haven’t had any issues personally doing so.
I use Blue Tree immigration in Surin Phuket.

No, You arrive at the airport, hand over your passport and get 30 days of stay based on the Visa Exempt Entry.
Then you visit an Immigration Office to apply for a 30 day Extension of Stay based on tourism.
Easier and more convenient is to apply before you even make your way into Thailand for the Single Entry Tourist Visa which gives you directly 60 days on entry and can be extended once at a local Immigration Office with another 30 days.
