TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can extend your 30-day visa in Thailand by visiting the immigration office in Chiang Mai and paying the fee of 1900 baht. This option is available for those on a visa-exempt entry stamp, allowing for an additional 30 days. Keep in mind that immigration regulations can change, so it's advisable to check for the latest updates before proceeding.

Back in 2014 they changed the rule and now people on 30 day visa exempt entry stamps can apply for a 30 day extension at the immigration office for 1900baht.

Not so many changes. Extensions for visa exemption are 30 days for quite a few years now. 7 days is what you get when they deny your application - the time they give you to pack your shit and leave ๐Ÿ˜„. 8 years ago it might have not been possible to extend exemption at all, that's why you got 7 days.
