I will be traveling on U.S. passport arriving and staying in Chiang Mai on visa exempt status which I understand is obtain at airport in Chiang Mai, is free and is good for 30days. I plan to stay @ 60 days. Where can I get an extension in Chiang Mai - what is cost - what do I need to show in terms of documents? Do I have to wait until the last day or two of the initial visa exempt to get an extension allowing for the total of 60 days or can I get it after say, 2 weeks and have it "start" after my visa exempt expires thus still allowing a total stay of 60 days. My thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers on a U.S. passport arriving in Chiang Mai on a visa exempt status can stay for 30 days, but can extend their stay for an additional 30 days at any immigration office in Chiang Mai. The extension costs 1,900 baht and requires several documents: a passport-sized photo, a copy of the passport (with entry stamp), and the filled extension application form. The extension can be applied for anytime during the initial 30 days, not just on the last day before expiration.

, the advice offered out by

, is the best course of action. Get a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate in the US before you wing your way here. That would get you stamped in for 60 days when you land AND if you wanted to extend that another 30 days you could at the immigration office for 1900baht.

Probably more cost effective if you get a SETV for around 1'000 THB (depends which country you get it from) before you enter Thailand, That allows you 1 entry to Thailand and up to 60 days in the country. You could basically go the next day to any immigration in Thailand and extend it for 30 days at a cost of 1'900 THB which would give you a total of 90 days.

Alternative

You enter Thailand on a Visa Exempt which allows you to stay up to 30 days for free. You can extend that any day after you entered the country at any immigration office in Thailand and extend it for 30 days at a cost of 1'900 THB which would give you a total of 60 days.

The 30 days extension will be added on to the "Admitted Until" date shown on your entry stamp. (Not the date you apply for it)

You need:

- 1,900 Thai Baht

- Your passport

- filled in application (get it at the immigration office)

- passport photo (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, they aren’t too picky like some places)

- photocopy of your passport, you current Thai visa, and your stamps into the country

Sufficient funds, Onward ticket.

Sure, why not. The 2 entries per year rule is only if you're on a Visa Exempt and you enter by land. Even there, immigration will not necessarily enforce it if there are several weeks or months in between.

As you have entered on a Tourist Visa, not very likely you would have problem entering in two weeks on a 30 days Visa Exempt - as long you comply to the requirements needed.

Many thanks - for my purposes this may be just the ticket (or visa).

If you're in the US just spend the $200 and get a 6 month METV it will simplify your life

IMHO I have met many people who say I only want to stay 60 days....3 years later

Every 60 days you have to do a border bounce....no 90 day reporting and if you get 6 months in case you feel like extending your stay

You can get extension anytime at Chiang Mai Immigration, don't need to wait last days of your stamp validity.

The cost is 1,900 baht.

Bring one passport size photo, copy of your passport (pages with photo and data, page with entry stamp, departure card), and your passport, of course. You will fill the extension form at Immigration.

Go to Promenada any time after you arrive. Immigration is in the parking garage. You will need a passport photo and a copy of your passport info and arrival stamp pages. You can obtain those at a little shop right there next to immigration. Fill out the extension form, front and back. It will be in a basket at the front of the immigration lines, outside, you'll see it. Wait in line with these and 1900 baht. After they review your papers and take the money, you go inside and sit until you are called for a photo taken by them, then you will be called again to retrieve your passport with the extension stamp.
