TLDR : Answer Summary
If you exit Thailand and plan to re-enter after a short trip to Laos, your current 60-day exemption visa will be canceled. Upon re-entry, you may obtain a new 30 or 60-day visa exemption, depending on the immigration officer's discretion. There are concerns about being denied entry if immigration suspects you're misusing the visa exemption system. Several commenters suggest considering applying for a NON-O visa based on marriage for a more secure long-term stay. Observing the requirement to spend at least two nights in Laos before trying to re-enter Thailand is recommended.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

At the Chiang Khong border on the Thai side, before entering Laos, you will be asked to stay at least 2 nights in Laos and provide a return plane ticket to the country within 2 months of your return to Thailand.

100% don't go the nongkhai route as very good chance you won't get back into Thailand, if you want another 60days use a border bounce agent pattaya 3,500

Another way to extend your stay:

Go to immigration with your Thai wife, a copy of your marriage certificate, fill out the TM7 form, and pay 1,900 baht. You will then receive a visa extension for another 60 days.

you wont have any problems Jim apart from the wait at the border for your entry visa to Lao can take a little while Up to two hours depending on the time of day and how many people are there relax and enjoy it fine to go Lao for a few days albeit a bit boring lol

Just make sure you spend at least a couple nights in Laos as that's a requirement at many of the borders now to be allowed back into Thailand if you don't have a visa.

Sorry, what does that mean, “border bounce 58 days?”

Do you mean stay in Cambodia for 58 days or leave Thailand after 58 days! Then return for 60 day visa exemption”

Thanks

Why not apply non-o based on marriage then? Then you have proper visa and give you 90 days on entry that you can extend 1 year 🤷

Thanks for the info. I'm not too too worried about not regaining entry. My passport proves I've been out of Thailand for 6 months prior to this entry and I have a return ticket home.

As soon as you exit Thailand your current visa exemption is canceled..

When you re-enter you will get another 60 day exemption..

However your entry to Thailand is always at the discretion of the Immigration officer you are dealing with on the day..

If for whatever reason they believe you are not a genuine tourist and abusing the visa exemption entry system to live in Thailand you can be refused entry..

and admitting to having a Thai wife will not help to convince Immigration that the OP is a Tourist
