A "SETV" cannot be gotten online as an American in Japan (screenshot proof attached). Later I will travel to Germany, it says I can get one online there. If I fly GERMANY -> PHILIPPINES (2 weeks) -> THAILAND with such a visa, will I be allowed entry? Or will they force me to fly direct from Germany to be allowed admission? Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American traveling from Japan cannot apply for a SETV (Single Entry Tourist Visa) online due to restrictions; they must do so in person at Thai embassies. Once they reach Germany, however, they can apply online for the SETV. Concerns arise regarding whether flying from Germany to the Philippines and then to Thailand will affect entry requirements. The consensus among commenters suggests that as long as the visa is approved in Germany, the travel itinerary should be acceptable, but checking specific consulate requirements is advisable.

Now whether you will be successful getting an eVisa from the thai consulate in Germany without showing proof of a flight from germany to thailand is between you and the consulate you will apply at.

Go to their website, READ the requirements and see if it says you need to show travel to thailand from germany or not for the flight info

The information is only available in German. Assuming the translator is correct I'm out of luck "Applicants who do not have the citizenship of a member state of the European Union (EU) must upload the front and back of their German residence permit in scanned, color form." - I have no such permit or citizenship. I hope there is another country in Europe I can go to to get a SETV.

no issue at all using the eVisa system to apply for a tourist visa at the appropriate thai consulate in germany based on where you are as a US passport holder,

you show that you are allowed IN germany when you apply for the visa (by uploading your entry stamp) BUT as I said you will have to probably show a flight from Germany to thailand

Why not just come in visa exempt, take the 30 day extension in country, THEN if you want to go to a thai consulate nearby and get a single entry tourist visa

Thanks. I will try to go through the app process when I'm in Germany and see what happens (even though the German website had text suggesting I won't have a required doc). Visa exempt: Yep! I'm trying to stay 90 days in the most efficient way possible without visa runs or anything added. Worst case, I can stay 60 exempt + extension + do a run for the final 30.

as Ellie pointed out NO ONE can apply for an eVisa in Japan not even Japanese nationals because they're not ON the eVisa system yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

you go to the website of the consulate you want to apply at, you read the requirements, meet the requirements, go to the consulate and apply for the visa, wait the processing time and get the visa issued.

here's a screen shot showing japanese national wanting to apply for a thai visa in japan, you see it gets the same error message as you did, so it's nothing to do with your nationality ๐Ÿ™‚

Thai embassy and consulates in Japan are not on eVisa system yet. Nobody in Japan can use eVisa to apply for a visa. You need to go to the embassy/consulates in person to apply.

You should be fine with those itinerary as long as you get your SETV approved

Thanks for your update on being able to get the SETV single entry tourist visa in Japan. It's strange but Japan sets the requirements.

Re your question about getting the SETV single entry tourist visa in Germany by showing the flights from Germany to the Philippines to Thailand... submit the application to the Thai Embassy or Consulate in Germany using the Evisa online application system. It should be OK. As you are flying from Germany and getting the Evisa online SETV single entry tourist visa in Germany

ONCE the SETV single entry tourist visa is approved... you have up to 3 months to enter Thailand.

Look carefully at the Evisa online application requirements as shown on the German Thai Embassy or Consulate where you are submitting on-line your application.
