Can I get a re-entry permit on a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) for Thailand?

The man at the Thai Consul in Cardiff told me I would not be able to get a re-entry permit on a SETV - is this true?

He’s suggested I go in on visa exemption as I’m going to Sri Lanka & then returning to Thailand on visa exemption again & show another booking to leave the country before 30 days. I’m staying for 2 months over all.

I’m thinking the best thing to do will be to get a SETV in Colombo, though it will mean staying longer than I had planned ...

Thank you for any advice 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses confusion regarding obtaining a re-entry permit while on a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) for Thailand. The author was informed by a consul that they couldn't get a re-entry permit with a SETV, leading to discussions about alternative entry methods, such as using the visa exemption upon returning from Sri Lanka. Comments clarify that a re-entry permit can indeed be obtained with a SETV, and offer varying opinions on how best to navigate entry and travel documentation requirements.

Is this a JOKE; I go to Thailand and Sri Lanka for a period of max 60 days. But if the airline company or Immigration ask for onward travel I do not mention the ticket I already have to Sri Lanka but I just start lying about a fake bus trip to Laos or when i come back from Sri Lanka I need another fake story in stead of the ticket back home. Sometimes you better tell the truth.

here's a PRO-TIP:

NEVER EVER trust a thai consulate employee in another country about anything you can do INSIDE thailand once you get here visa/extension wise

AND

NEVER EVER trust a thai immigration officer inside the country about anything you can do OUTSIDE the country visa wise at a consulate.

They are two completely different government agencies and have nothing to do with each other.

I thank you everyone - I’m going to do the Visa Exempt entry method - however I’m worrying if I need to show an onward journey. I’ve been told to just tell IO that I’m planning a bus trip to Laos, and will indeed do that, but have some anxiety!

Flying from the UK it’s very likely you’ll need either a visa or confirmed onward travel within 30 days in order to check in for your flight. Thai immigration probably won’t ask you. Your airline probably will.

well, keep in mind FLYING here on a visa exempt entry (meaning you have NO visa in your passport) you can be required to show proof of onward travel when you check in to your airline within the number of days you're going to be stamped in for (that would be 30). I'd call them FIRST, and see if you can even board the plane flying visa exempt without proof of onward travel.

you can get the re-entry permit for a SETV. BUT, you need to look if the 1200 THB for a re-entry at the Suvarnabhumi Airport is worth buying . . . . if your stay on the SETV visa is almost used up after you already stayed for 7 weeks, the re-entry will only be valid until the end of the original 2-months "admitted until" date

2 months all over. You have indeed 2 options. Or get the Single Entry Tourist Visa, which gives you 60 days on entry and when you leave to Sri Lanka get yourself the re-entry permit. Visa cost 30 pounds about 1200 Thb and re-entry permit 1.000 Thb. OR come to Thailand use the free 30 day Visa exempt entry, leave within these 30 days to Sri Lanka and on return get a new 30 day free Visa Exempt Entry. I guess the man tried to save you some money.

Not true. Do it at the airport or immigration
