I read that these banks are in Thailand. (Citibank, JP Morgan Chase Bank, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch) Can we put the 800,000 in one of them and leave it.. Then get a Visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion clarifies that Citibank, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch do not operate retail banking for individuals in Thailand. To obtain a visa requiring a deposit (such as the Non-O visa), expats must place the funds in a Thai bank, keep the amount above 400,000 Baht for at least three months, and ensure it reaches 800,000 Baht three months before renewal. It is recommended to open an account at a Thai bank like Bangkok Bank, as foreign banks cannot be used for this purpose.

No card ? You have wise debit card?
Brooke ***********
Download the Wise app. Obtain their debit card. Transfer your home funds to your Wise “account” into your Baht “jar” or into your US$ “jar” (for a better rate later?). Arrive at Bangkok airport, go to nearest ATM and withdraw baht from your baht jar. It’s that simple. You can use it at any ATM…some have 20k limits but the “yellow” ATMs had 30k limits for 220 Baht fee. Once your bank account is open you simply transfer your baht funds from Wise to your bank and use their ATMs for no fee. I found the Wise exchange rate to be by far the best. From Canada I tried my TD bank direct and the rate offered was ridiculous. Wise is widely used in Asia…oodles of YouTube videos to familiarize yourself.

The problem is the Indians play "pass the parcel" with the money, so one uses it to get a visa, then withdraw it and give it to someone else etc.
Didrik *********
@Graham ******
But....the amount can never be less than 400.000 and all 800.000 has to be on the account for a couple of months before you apply, so it's a little bit more complicated. Unless they only care about if they can only stay for 1 year and then leaves.
Graham *******
@Didrik ********
thats how it was. Also I have done 3 90 day reports no one asked any questions.
Didrik *********
@Graham ******
So the minimum at you account for the whole year does not exist anymore, is that what you are saying? They will not ask you about what you have in the bank when you do a 90 report, thats only when you apply for a new 1 year visa.
Graham *******
@Didrik ********
When you apply for a new 1 year extension of stay I can imagine they will ask for a bank statement showing what balance was keep for the previous year, my belief is that it most never fall below 400k. When i did my 90 day reports they did not ask for bank statements.

As a foreigner I would recommend Bangkok Bank. But you’ll need an address in Thailand to open up the account. If you buy an apartment in Thailand they’ll open up the account and you can use this adress.

I called Bangkok Bank in New York to see if I deposited money there could I access it in Thailand. Said nope you would still have to pay for a transfer of funds

Never seen any branches of the Banks outlined above!!! With this said,I don’t really look for them!

Just get a Thai Bank Account that deals with the general public. It took a little work, but just relax & pop into a few different Banks (even different branches of the same Bank)

Just do a bit of research first & gather all the required documentation first!

All the best 👍
Ian *****
Nope . No personal accounts from them

@Sharron ******
you have to turn up in person in Thailand at the bank to open a bank account. They will need more information from you than you think.
Graham *******
@Sharron ******
I think you have to attend a bank in person to open an account. Not always straight forward.

None of those banks hold retail banking licenses in Thailand. Citi did but exited the market.
Ossi *********
For example, use Bangkok Bank. That is the one which immigration accept. Maybe other also. Agency helped me open account there.

Nice try, but no.

Thanks for the question because I was just wondering the same thought this morning.

@Frances *******
it's a good question, but not possible

@Todd ********
yeah, I saw a Citibank in Bangkok and thought how convenient if I had a US Citibank account & could access funds from the Bangkok location.
Graham *******
I do not think there are any foreign banks here doing retail banking. You have to put the money in a thai bank, keep it there for at least 3 months and the balance can never go below 400k and must be back at 800k 3 months before renewal.
Bob *******
@Graham ******
I put 800K in a Bank got extension for 1 year took 400K out after 5 months and have been putting 65K in bank every month by international payment . And then take out. I never go below 400K I will have 12 months of payments when renew extension. So I presume I don’t need to put another 400K in bank for 3 months
Ken ********
@Bob ******
thats kind of wht I'm wondering about - in 3 months (after the official first day of non-O 1 year visa) I plan on taking 400K out (from the 800K I put in)...and I've been putting in 65,000 THB a month already. Question is, does it have to be pushed back to 800K for 3 months before the 1st year ends? Even if putting in 65,000 THB a month allows for the following year to no longer need that 800K - just the 65,000 THB per month?
Chris *******
@Ken *******
if you do not put it back up to 800k 2 months before application AND if for some reason they deny your application of income method, you will not qualify for the extension.

It would be prudent to top it back up if you are able, for a plan B just in case.

You never know.

And remember the 800k must be in the account for 3 months after approval NOT day of application.

Even a couple days can mess it up.
Graham *******
@Bob ******
I believe that's correct, as of today. Do remember that next year there is a tax change, and this change might ensnare expats.
Vernon *********
@Graham ******
They have branches all over Thailand.
Graham *******
and the advantage of opening an account there is..?
Ian *******
@Graham ******
I have a UOB savings account for my 800k, it was paying the best interest rate some time ago
Graham *******
@Ian ******
what is minimum balance, and do they offer credit cards?
Vernon *********

@Vernon ********
Singaporean, probably has no retail banking license.
Brandon ************
None of these banks do business with individuals in Thailand.

The Thailand entities are not the same as the ones in other countries. You cannot deposit your money in these banks because you cannot get an account in Thailand with these banks

@Brandon ***********
Not true I have a bank account and credit card with Citibank which I opened in Bangkok 7 years ago 👍

I have lived in Bangkok, Hua Hin, and the tourist islands and I can confidently say their are no retail branches of these American banks anywhere in those places
Andrew *******
@Sharron ******
you may well have found that these banks do business in Thailand (and even have dedicated offices in Thailand) but that doesn't mean they do business with expats.
Brandon ************
@Sharron ******
And that information doesn't mean anything to you because these banks do not do business with people in Thailand. If they are in Thailand at all they only deal with companies and not individuals. And even if you COULD deposit your money with them, you would have to come to Thailand and open an account and deposit the money because the Thai entities are not the same as those in other countries. Just because the name is the same doesn't mean it's the same bank.

The requirement is your money must be in a THAI bank account in your name only.
