Is it possible to arrive on a single entry tourist visa, get married and then convert the visa to a year long multi entry based on marriage within the country? Or I'd have to travel elsewhere for a new visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is not possible to convert a single-entry tourist visa directly into a year-long multi-entry NON-O visa while remaining in Thailand. However, one can convert a tourist visa to a 90-day NON-O visa based on marriage if requirements are met; this allows for an extension of stay. For a year-long NON-O visa, it is necessary to travel to the Savannakhet consulate in Laos or Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam after getting married, as the Thai embassy in Vientiane does not issue multi-entry visas.

Get married first...

Then make copies of all you required documents. Take a trip to Savannakhet, Laos...

Pay for laos visa....take a tuk tuk to Thai consulate. Acquire the form to fill out either front window or pay the make shift booths for them to fill it out for you. Have passport size pictures ready. Stand in line submit your neat papers in. And if you have all correct then go enjoy the rest of your day and drink some beer.

Jordan ********
Ian Sutty Suttonno it's only a Thai consulate
Ian ********
Its not a consulate in Vientiane its a Thai Embassy

@Jor***
, The ONLY two thai consulates in the area that will issue year-long multi-entry Non-O visas based on marriage to a thai without showing any financials are the ones in Savannakhet Lao and the one in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam.

The thai consulate in Vientiane will only issue 90 day single entry Non-O's and they want proof of financials too.
Ian ********
They dont do multy rntry there

Can I not get the visa for marriage in vientiene
Jordan ********
Is savannakhet further then vientien?
Ian ********
No not possible in country to get a NON O multi entry. You can convert tourist visa to a 90 day NON O then extend your permision to stay based on marriage at immigration.

For the year NON O you can vizit laos Savannakhet to get the visa once married cost 5k no proof of funds needed. You getb90 day entries extend that by 60 days at immigration based on visiting wife so 5 months in country then border hop and do it all again.

EXTENSION based on Marriage you need 400k in a thai bank account in your name only which for the first extension has to be in bank for 2 months or income of 45k pm proved by letrer from your Embassy. Plus other paper work and photos.

Ian Sutty correct i been doing same as you for years, like to have my independance and dont mind border hops every 90 as i am only 3hr from Mae sai, and leave it till my last 90 to extend for 60, but after done Mae Sai i go to immigration in Phayao with missus and just do report were i live,
Tod *********
I'm weighing in with Ian, on this. (y)

If you come in on a 90 day Non-O, or a 60 day tourist visa stamp and then apply for the 60 day visit family extension, even though you've been in the country longer than 90 days, you don't have to file a 90 day report. When I asked the immigration officer about it they said because that visit family extension is the "first" extension and they've got it STARTS the 90 day count down calendar.

I have had a bunch of friends get that 60 day visit family extension on tourist and Non-O stamps and none of them had to do a 90 day report.
Ian ********
Where do you think i get a 60 day extension from
****
?
Ian ********
If you say so have been doing them for more years than i care to remember and i can tell you a 90 day report is for extension of stay only.
Lloyd ********
Ian sutty Sutton if you get a 60 day extension you need to do a 90 day report - you will have been in country for over 90 days.

Good luck.
Ian ********
Robert im sorry you do not know what your talking about. You do not do a 90 day report. You get a 60 day extension based on visiting wife
Ian ********
Im not getting into a pissing match with you mate i can tell you my immigration require picture of you and mrs sitting on bed. All immigration officers are diffrent with diffrent interpritations on what they require
Robert *******
If you come in for 90 days and extend for another 60 days you do need to do a 90 day in country report, because you do not go outside for 150 days.
Robert *******
No, they not want you sit or lay down on your bed. Just a picture with clothes on inside the house is good enough. I do this for 9 years, I read those stories from others but it is NOT true.
Ian ********
Steve on a non o you dont do 90 day reports you need to leave country and re enter
Ian ********
Here they want one of you sitting on your bed but not really happy so i go for Non O

I'll never need to do a 90 day report, I'm in and out very often for work. 6 weeks at work and 3 weeks in Thailand. A year long Multi will be my best option and then apply for the yearly extension next year once I have the funds in the kitty
Robert *******
a picture of you both outside the house and one inside the house are intrusive? But as said, I do not like to travel to borders for stamps, I stop by Immigration every 90 days during the shopping trip to town.
Ian ********
You dont have to travel every 90 days every 150 days. Plus if you get it sorted you get 17mths out of visa. I use it as it suits me and i dislike having to have what is in my opinion intrusive photograph of me and the mrs. To satisfy immigration
Ian ********
Yes sorry 40k pm missed i wrote 45
Robert *******
I have for many years the Extension of Stay and do not do border runs, I love it. But if you like to travel every 90 days, have fun.

There a shop over the road for a small fee they will make sure you have everything correct.

Yeah, I'll be heading to Laos.
Jordan ********
What are the requirements for this?
Robert *******
@Tim *****
Living in what ever country without money is hard. Opening Thailand for more people without money is not the solution.
Tim ******
Yeah it is very bad. I am married to a Thai and have a baby on the way. Her family is my family. My own blood related family has cut me off, and i am on my own. The visa policy is so cruel when you have a family. I dont even have 400k or 40k a month to show for an extension. It is very hard to have a lifw in this country, meanwhile the old Thai population is dying off. This country needs to be more opened up already.
Жанна ************
its sure one of the way to think.

@Жанна ***********
it would make sense if it wasn't biased based on gender. Unless that's just my British way of thinking
Жанна ************
Tod Daniels thank you! good news. perhaps Thai men need to show 40k thb/m income, 555
Жанна ************
Steven Lofthouse why else would men need to show funds???? make perfect sense. it wouldn't the other way around
Жанна ************
@Jordan *******
same reason why men have to show funds marrying a woman

😮 that is absolute madness!!!
Lloyd ********
No, they do not. (Guess because the man is supposed to provide for the woman).
Jordan ********
@Tod ********
do females not have to show funds?
Tod *********
@Jor***
, why what?
Jordan ********
Tod *********
@Жа***
, when foreign women marry thai guys the requirements are the same except they do not show the 400K baht banked or the 40K baht a month income.
Жанна ************
lol! It looks these are only marrying a Thai woman. Wonder if there are any regulations marrying a Thai man

At some immigration offices you can apply 15 days before the last day of your admitted to stay period for a conversion to a Non O based on marriage if you meet all the requirements. This will give you 90 days, than you can apply for 1 year Extension of Stay.

Easier for me to just go to Laos then. I'll go and ask in Udon and see what they say first though.
