Hello all, I am wondering if I can change a visa.

1. From tourist visa to teaching visa (work permit) (me)

2. From tourist visa to student visa (me)

3. from tourist visa to Non ) dependent visa (my husband after we marry - after arriving in Thailand on a tourist visa - he's my fiance now)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation explores the possibility of changing a tourist visa to a teaching visa (with a work permit), a student visa, and a Non-O dependent visa after marriage. It discusses the need for proper documentation, the requirement for marriage before applying for a dependent visa, and the process involved. Users highlight that while you can change your visa type, you cannot hold multiple visas at the same time. Additionally, it stresses the importance of having a clear plan regarding work or study and consulting reliable agencies to navigate the complexities of visa regulations.

Okay evidently
@Ste***
didn't like the information I provided by messenger so tried here for info :P ;)

Here's how the break down works

-IF she comes in on a visa exempt or tourist visa does the in country conversion to a Non-B/work permit and her burmese husband comes in on a tourist visa he could indeed get a 90 day non-O and then a matching extension based on marriage to someone who works here legally

HOWEVER,

IF she comes in on a visa exempt or tourist visa and goes on an ED visa her burmese husband cannot get a Non-O issued inside the country and cannot get a matching extension

That's as clear as I can make it.

If she's gonna come in and go on a ED visa then even if she marries her burmese fiance he's not gonna get a "trailing spouse" Non-O and extension.

Tod Daniels. Just to clarify, does that also apply to someone undertaking a university degree, in that they cannot have a trailing spouse?

I have never seen the immigration office issue an in country 90 day Non-O visa based on being married to someone enrolled in a university. Now they might be able to get the Non-O in their country before they come here (if they're already married) and then do the piggyback (trailing spouse extension) based on marriage to someone studying in a university here BUT that's between them and the immigration office they're dealing with

Tod Daniels. Got it. Thanks

You're asking a very complicated question with your husband dependent on you for his permission to stay so there are sequence issues and dependencies. Throw in the complication that you're not actually married yet and it causes a lot of extra uncertainty. Also, not a lot of people have experience doing exactly what you're proposing to do. Therefore, I don't think it's wise to do it in pieces. Because if done that way you might find that at the end the pieces don't fit together. I'm going to recommend two things.

1) Post this question as a topic on
*************************************************************************
forum and wait for a response from ubonjoe. See what
@Tod ********
thinks on this forum.

2) Talk to an agency. I almost never would say this but in this case it's not for convenience or bending the rules, it's simply to understand if it's possible to do something that is as complex as this is. In my opinion, you're going to need someone with a lot of experience (hence recommendation one) or someone who can have a very involved discussion with actual immigration people in Thai (hence recommendation two).

Good luck. I'm way out of my depth on this one.

I'm sorry, I don't. I have no experience with agents. I generally don't like that path, but every tool has its use given the right circumstance. I do my own retirement extensions which I understand and I did go from a Non-ED visa to a Non-O (retirement) all within Thailand, but I don't know the work permit/business visa areas at all.

Thanks for the explanation. I am looking for an agency but don't know any reliable ones that won't scam me. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you kindly. As for option 1, I shall do just that, thanks for the recommendation!

Stella Labang. You'll need to get a firm plan on what you actually want to do, work or study, and as George has said you definitely need to be married as you will have to provide a marriage certificate which has been certified as authentic. Defacto relationships mean totally zero in Thailand. I don't believe you can get an ED overseas at the moment, but you can speak with schools (many of which have a dedicated visa service - a defacto visa agent, except they are completely legal) you can find one in the area you plan to live. The school can arrange the visa and the cost is inclusive in your course fees. Once you've done this and converted your visa, your spouse can then apply for an extension based on being married to a foreigner on an ED visa. I concur with George, the man you want to speak to is Tod Daniels. I'm on retirement visa having had a non-B years ago, but my knowledge of switching to ED with trailing spouse is too limited to give you sound advice

You can change your type of visa but you can’t hold 2 visa in one person. By the way, for you husband(your fiancé for now). If he want to stay in Thailand with you by your visa. It depend on what type of visa you have.

I meant either or, only 1, just wanted to know in case one of them I can't stay in the country to change it ^_^

@Stella *******
Stella Labang ok I understand now. You can change the type of visa in Thailand. For example, teaching visa and work permit. I guess you may have non-b visa and work permit. If you have non-b visa your husband must change his visa in non-o visa.

I would like to know, if one can changes from an ED visa to a non B visa, can you change without leaving the country?
Noon **********
@Lalitha *******
Hello. You can change your type of visa in Thailand and no need to go aboard if your visa still not expired. By the way, if you want to get non-B visa the officer will consider lot of thing such as the company you work with.
Anne *******
@Lalitha *******
Hi Lala I had students who were able to do it. :)

You can't have both an education visa and a non-B (work) visa. But you can go from a tourist visa to either of these provided all your documents are in order. Your school or your employer (depending on which way you go) will arrange this. You also need a work permit for the Non-B. You need to be actually married for your spouse to get the "trailing spouse" visa. You don't actually need an agent to do this. The "agent" will be your school or your employer

I want to know what the legal regulations are, I asked many different immigrations, each one says something different, so I want to know legally what is or is not possible.. I am having a hard time getting matching information from immigration within Thailand.
Bobby ********
Stella Labang. You can change from a standard tourist visa or a visa exempt but as
@George ************
has said the STV is a no go. You can do the change in country if your school or employer gets the documents in order. Have you spoken yet with any school or prospective employer yet?
Stella ********

@Bobby *******
Yes, but he is coming in on a STV or a tourist Visa. Can he change it without leaving the country?
George *************
@Stella *******
STV would be a problem as it is not possible to go from STV to any other visa in Thailand, it's a "feature" of that particular visa.
