Can I switch from a tourist visa to a work visa in Thailand without returning to the US?

Hello all!

I just joined and have a question :)... I'm currently in NY planning a trip to Thailand(first time) in late October. My girlfriend who is an Au Pair is going back to her home in Songkhla... So I decided to pick up and go with her! I'm planning to get a 60 day tourist visa from the embassy in NY in September I think. I also plan to look for a teaching position in Hatyai while I'm there in person.

The question is can I switch from a tourist visa to a work visa if I land a position in Hatyai without having to come back to the US?
