I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? Recently I misplaced my passport and went to the police station and reported it lost and recieved a form stating this situation. A couple of days later I found the passport and before I had reapplied for a new passport. Can I go back to the police station and show them that I have found the passport and they then cancel the lost status so I don’t have to go through the re-application process?
Answer summary
If you reported your passport lost to the police in Thailand and later found it, it is generally advisable to return to the police station to cancel the lost status report. Some commenters affirmed that the police would assist in canceling the report, while others warned that if your embassy has already been informed of the loss, the passport may be flagged as compromised. Therefore, it's crucial to verify both with the police and your embassy regarding the necessary steps to avoid complications in the future. Confirming the document's status before traveling is recommended to ensure the passport isn't marked as invalid.

You really need to ask the police dept. usually people report their passport as lost with the local police station, but you went to the police station based inside the airport, which is undoubtedly much more connected to immigration systems.

can I?!? why don't you just do that and let us know about it afterwards.

That is the first thing I would have done. And to receive further instructions if needed.

Go to the police station and rectify the report ...they will rectify the report as a closed case.....End of story ....❗️❗️❗️

There was a story a while ago about someone coming to Thailand from Germany who did exactly the same and got refused entry as his passport was flagged in the system.

I'm afraid it's a new passport for you.

Report to police you've found it but id also contact passport office and ask if its good or you need to reaply for a new one just to cover yourself

Thanks Gary. I do plan to do that. I’m wondering if they would tell me at the airport immigration dept? Then I can do both things at once.

The short answer is yes. Local Police and your embassy are 2 separate silos.

I saw them enter the police lost passport paper into the system pertaining to my immigration status at the airport police immigration desk behind passport control.

If already reported lost, then the best thing to do is to go through the process of getting a new one. Regardless of hassle because once your embassy has flagged it as lost, it is considered compromised. Even if you report that you found it, there is no promise that it has not been cloned and or that you are the original owner and it will be a hassle going forward if you were to use the old one again.

Hi Mike. Embassy isn’t aware, I didn’t notify them and the passport didn’t fall into other persons hands.

Why don't you just go back to the police station and get the right answer instead of trying to decide what is right info or just bullshit on Facebook.

Because it’s the police station at the airport and I don’t want the hassles if I can avoid it.

Miyamoto Musashi no, Facebook is good just do nothing.

If the Thai Police entered the passport into the international systems, you just waste some time, the next time you Cross a border.

However if you reported it lost to embassy it’s too late

I believe, in one of the expats forums, there was recently an individual with this scenario that ran into problems. Governmental agencies aren’t exactly exemplary in their record keeping.

You only need the police report to have a document so you can apply for a new passport by your embassy

Normally NOT. Most countries won't cancel a passport loss report, meaning that if you try to fly with it, the system will flag it as invalid

It’s also been flagged with the customs and immigration dept at the airport as a lost passport.

Darren Thomson That is nonsense. The passport does not get flagged. However if it is found and ends up in a police station, they quickly figure where it was lost and mail it to the station where it was reported.

of course you can - but the police doesnt do anything with the report anyway - that is for you, to get a new passport ...

That's not the way it works.

RTP SOP nowadays is different from years ago.

The policeman after recording your lost of passport report lets you have a copy to facilitate its repkacement by your embassy.

On his end... he has to input your lost passport details into the government central database which is linked to various government agencies including the immigration.

If someone tries to use that passport.... a search on the government system will flag it as reported lost.

Thailand has advanced technologically and is now one of the leaders amongst the ASEAN countries in the use of digital tech in its governance.
