Howdy, have any of you gentlemen who may have had some legal problems had trouble applying for an O visa in your home country ? I have a single DUI that I got about 5 years ago. No other negative history. Thoughts ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is inquiring whether having a DUI conviction from five years ago will affect their ability to apply for an O visa in Thailand. The responses indicate that the Non-O visa does not require a background check, including in the case of DUI convictions. Users clarified the distinction between the Non-O and Non-OA visas, noting that only the Non-OA visa requires a check and has additional financial requirements. The discussion also touched on visa types, specifically retirement and marriage visas, and the financial requirements associated with them.

It might be easier to just leave deposited and not worry about it. I gotta leave to the wife when I croak anyway. But thanks again.

Thanks. Yes, I was referring to the 400,000 baht deposit as opposed to the 800,000.

Greg Alexander Thai wife ? I would think that my stating “I qualify” would make that clear. But, to your main point… Thank you for the thoughtful response. I do have a lifetime pension that is greater than the monthly requirement. The 400,000 is also not a problem, but it’s nice to know that after a year of deposits I can roll over to the monthly. I appreciate your time.

whether you can use monthly deposits or not will depend on your local immigration office. An increasing number are now only allowing income earned in Thailand for an extension based on marriage

Either way is fine. 400,000 stuck in a bank in perpetuity is no hardship.

For marriage extensions, you only need to show that the money is in the account for 2 months before you apply each year. Then once you get your extension (after the under consideration period) you can remove it. That means it's only locked up for about 3 months per year.

Richard Mellem so you are married to a Thai wife? Yes, to qualify for the 90-days Non-Imm-O Family Visa, you can use original income documents or a deposit in your home country bank - minimum 40,000 THB income or minimum 400,000 THB deposit. For the application to the 1-year Extension of the Stay Permit on the Immigration inside Thailand, at least in the first year you would need the 400,000 THB in your Thai bank account (because your embassy does not issue any income affidavits). Once you have accumulated 12 months of bank transfers coming in from abroad, month for month, over more than 40,000 THB, you can theoretically switch to the 12-months bank transfer method, but need to maintain the monthly transfers

with all the “O’s” I get confused. I can qualify for either the retirement or marriage visa, with the marriage visa being cheaper (obviously) but better ?

The non-O based on marriage is the same price as every non-O visa. There are different financial requirements, but it's not cheaper.

Richard Mellem yep they’re both Non-O visas, just for different purposes. Same criteria, though. No background check.

Dave Montore but the marriage extension is a much bigger headache than retirement

Bob D'Andrea Could you elaborate please? If it’s just the marriage license and proof of cohabitation that’s no biggie. But other headaches ?
