How does a past felony conviction affect Thai visa applications for expats?

How will being a convicted felon (bank robbery from over a decade ago) from the US effect any visa application other than the “visa exempt” 30 day stamp, which it doesn’t effect at all? I’m planning my future in Thailand but obviously this information is vital to the process. Thanks!!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion addresses concerns about the impact of a US felony conviction (bank robbery) on visa applications for Thailand. It suggests that while a 30-day visa exemption should not be affected, other visa types like the long-term NON-O or Thai Elite visa may be problematic, as they typically require background checks. Opinions vary, with some believing that older offenses might not be a barrier and emphasizing the importance of local clearance letters over US police checks.

Tod Daniels I am happy you said "most likely", so I will copy you on that. In the case of Thai Elite, RTP is most likely limited to checking one's criminal record locally in Thailand and at best the Interpol database for any arrest warrants outstanding. I do not see how they would identify criminal records of people in some 180 countries.

If you were to lie on your Thai Elite application (they ask if you have ever been convicted of a crime or incarcerated) and it is discovered after you become a member, it would not end well....
Luke ******
Tod Daniels yeah absolutely, non O-A requires the criminal check in one's country. I was referring to Thai Elite only.

@Lu**
on the thai elite visa you are most likely correct ;)

However on the Non-O-A which you get in your country I would imagine their record would come up during the background check and they would be denied. :/

Okay, no matter what people say there are two visas you're most likely unable to get and that would be the year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A visa from a thai consulate in your country before you come here OR the thai elite visa.

With that being said, you will have no issues getting into thailand on a 30 day visa exempt entry, buying a single or multiple entry tourist visa OR buying a 90 day Non-O visa and then getting a year extension of stay on it (once you turn 50). NONE of the previous choices I mentioned require a police report or background check.

You can get a tourist visa no issues.

That gives you 90 days a time (with extension)

Good luck....out of interest, how did they catch you 😬

Good news mate. Was just out of interest, never spoke to a bank robber before. Well done for turning it all around 👏👊

Turned in by a family member after they saw a surveillance photo on a website. Clean and sober 7+ years and turned my life around. Sorry to veer off topic but I’m proud of my success

HAHAHA -- I know the answers.. PM me if you want more information from person experience.

But... you can go to any local courthouse and get a 'all-clear' letter, that will serve as a police background check. The 'all-clear' just says no active cases, usually locally.

Your 10 year old felony not a problem. Make sure the local office is not in the same same state as the felony..

It would depend on how long a conviction stays on your record. Some countries give you a clean certificate if the offense is a certain number of years old. My understanding is that the only way to get rid of a felony conviction in the US is to have your record expunged. But this can only be done in certain circumstances. So if you apply fro a police clearance in the US right now, your conviction would be on that certificate. So any form of visa that requires a police background check from the US is ruled out.

Particularly if violence was involved.

Yes that makes sense. Unfortunately I can’t imagine getting a bank robbery conviction expunged.
Robert ********
As a convicted felon, you would not qualify for the Thailand Elite visa.
Luke ******
Don't bet on it.
Alan *******
I don’t think it will affect visa application originating inside Thailand.

This is basically what I found doing a google search but the info was from older message boards. I’m 44 and nearly 15 years away from retiring but I do travel there once a year and this group seems pretty quick to answer questions. Thanks!
