How hard do they look at your criminal record? I have a bunch of CDS arrest (24 total ) šŸ˜¬when i was younger, the last was in 2009, will that affect a retirement visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses concerns about the impact of a criminal record on obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand. The consensus is that for a Non-O visa, there is generally no background check, while a Non-OA visa may require checks if applied for in the home country. Users share experiences indicating that old, non-violent offenses usually do not affect visa applications, especially if there are no recent convictions. Many suggest that once a conviction is old enough (typically over 10 years), it may not adversely impact visa eligibility.

In the US I went to the local town hall, or whatever the city building is called and had the print out a statement that said I had no open cases.

Over the years I've had a few arrests but not in that town or state. I imagine all you need is an official looking document that says you have nothing.

Why publicise

Curious was that 24 separate arrests or 24 counts on 1 arrest?

There's no way Thai government would issue a visa to chronic drug dealer if they are made aware of it.

rubbishā€¦plenty of expats in Thailand have a police record in their country of originā€¦if their record is over 10 years old with no convictions since the record is SPENT!! And to have CDS convictions does not make the person a dealer .your auniformed square head
Kevin **********
@Damien *******
Depends how and who reports it and where in the chain of command it's reported and again by who. A lieutenant of Chao Pho could have anyone turned away at customs or their visa immediately revoked, record or not. You must be chronically clueless to not grasp how Thailand works
Damien ********
@Kevin *********
I know no custom or police or immigration officer in Thailand will know or find a persons criminal record if that person is British or Australian as records are cleared in those 2 countries after 11 years in Britain and 10 years in Australia if the person has no convictions in that time. I know at least 5 expats with records that have lived in Thailand for decades without any problems with visas or Thai authorities concerning their past.But you would condemn people forever without forgivenessā€¦.Buddhists believe that forgiveness is the remedy to anger..you forgive an offender when aroused by compassionā€¦..so as your an expert on Thailand you will be aware that the Thai government will distribute 1,000,000 free cannabis plants across the country allowing people to grow their own ā€œpotā€ at home and that you can buy marijuana at shops in Bangkok nowā€¦ legallyā€¦. How cool is that ?! Mr Squarehead ??
Kevin **********
@Damien *******
You don't know any custom, police or immigration officers in Thailand or you wouldn't be asking retirement visa questions on a FB page for you and your "partner" (wink wink) because if you did they would fill your Square Head in on how corrupt Thailand is. Which begs the question have actually ever been there?
Damien ********
@Kevin *********
you canā€™t even read or comprehendā€¦ I didnā€™t say I know any government officials in Thailand. I said they wouldnā€™t stop anyone from coming there or obtaining a visa if the person had a police record from the past that had been spentā€¦. Do u understand yetā€¦. Iā€™ve never mentioned a partner on this site in any questionsā€¦no more from meā€¦you are not worth any more of my time..if u respond I will not read it ā€¦ out ā€¦. Chokdee kharp

Morath It's called "opposition research". I also learned you are looking to get a retirement visa. How much you willing to bet I can have my father in law have that denied or revoked?

24 in total, wow, did you stay in the same vicinity waiting to get arrested.

Recently, all people arrested and jailed for cannabis possession were released when cannabis became legal here last month or so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe those convictions expire at some point. I have a 40 year old friend with a clean CRB, and he has managed to get work visas without problems. He was much naughtier than you... Try applying for an ACRO check online and you can see for yourself. About Ā£30 I think.

CDS is not a major crime is it ?? In Australia your police record ( conviction s) are spent after 10 years if you have no more convictions. Look up how long your record remains open in you country or stateā€¦.yours it over 13 years ago ā€¦.forget about it !

What is CDS ? Only Americans will understand that .

If you apply for CRB from UK you can choose basic, which is only the last 5 years. Is accepted for OA visa. Costs Ā£23. Apply online.

24 is a lot. Generally from what I've seen, unless it's recent and violent it won't affect you. I helped someone a few months ago get a Non-OA in the US, he had an felony armed robbery conviction 20+ years ago and they didn't care.

11 years without any issues I'd assume you're fine, only way to know for sure is apply and find out though.

the duality of lifeā€¦young and not caring to old and wondering if my past will haunt meā€¦itā€™s purely philosophical, do you understand???

it does not come across as a philosophical observation at all, more like a judgmental frowning because you disapprove of his past behavior.

Iā€™m sure you are not in denial and know perfectly well what you have done. Itā€™s ironical because your original comment was about being responsible but you refuse to take responsibility for your actions. Have a good evening.

youā€™re still being mean and angry towards me, which I have no idea whyā€¦I have answered your questions, but you refuse to answer my questionsā€¦you evade my questions while still being venomous towards me to stoke your egoā€¦I still have no idea why you commented on my comment in the first placeā€¦please stop being angry and mean towards me

you said it perfectly well. They always say the past will haunt you one day, but certain people don't believe that

I often wonder if we are haunted by past-lives or the sins of our ancestors. I have always lived a genuine, honest life and it still consistently kicks me in the nuts every chance it gets. No matter how much I try, I struggle, while watching scammers breeze by. It really makes you wonder if everything is ass-backwards now.

There is no background check for a retirement visa - non O anyway. There is if you apply for a Non OA in your home country.
