Quick question. I'll be arriving on a 30 day visa exemption and I'm wondering how soon I can apply for the 30 day extension? Right away? Or do I have to wait till the last day?

TLDR : Answer Summary
You can apply for a 30-day extension on your visa exemption as soon as you arrive in Thailand, as most immigration offices allow applications when there are 30 days or less remaining. However, some locations, such as Jomtien, Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan, only permit applications during the last week of your stay.

A even better idea, when wanting to stay more than 30 days is
When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.
It is cheaper than visaexcempt + 30 days extension.
No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.
It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).
I have thought of this but I don't have enought time apply in Canada as I'll be traveling in 3 weeks. I'll be going for a retirement visa for the next trip though ๐
if you can apply through Vancouver then 3 weeks is fine. If you have to apply through Ottawa don't even bother. They take months to even look at your application.

Try applying 3 weeks should not be a problem, some Embassy can make 60 day touristvisa in a few days.
Most embassies also process the application after departure date, with the visa being send to your email in the last week before departure.
Jomtien Immigration allow immediate application and next day issue if you apply with the help of a local visa agent. Costs 4,000 baht including the 1,900 baht that immigration charge for the extension. Enjoy your time in the Land of Smiles
