I am going to Thailand in January and staying for 2 weeks so no visa needed I then fly to Melbourne for a week and then back to Thailand for 5 weeks Can I apply for a tourist visa for the 5 weeks before I leave the UK in January?
Answer summary
The traveler plans to visit Thailand for two weeks without a visa, then travel to Melbourne and return to Thailand for an additional five weeks. They are curious about applying for a tourist visa for the five-week stay before departing the UK. Comments suggest it's possible to apply for a tourist visa before leaving the UK, but the visa may be utilized during the first entry, potentially leading to a visa exemption stamp instead. Travelers should check their airline's requirements regarding visa policies and consider that applying for a tourist visa while in Thailand is not permitted.

Wait until the info is available In a few weeks, you have plenty of time
i have entered on a 30 day exempt, while having a multy entry tourist visa. i was planning on meeting friends in Vietnam in 2 weeks and didn't want to waste 60 days, i explained to the immigration guy, he stamped me in for 30 days no problems. this was a while ago with visa in my PP, not Evisa.
You can obviously apply for a tourist visa before you leave the UK but the chances of it being used for your first entry are high, you can ask immigration to stamp you in visa exempt on your first entry but they may not do so. Even if they do 5 weeks is easily covered by what by then is likely to be a 30 day visa exempt entry along with a 30 day extension from a local immigration office
