Hi, does anybody have any experience of applying for a tourist visa not in your home country? My STV runs out soon and I’d like to potentially visit the US (I’m from the UK) and hoping I can apply to the embassy there? If it’s not possible to do so in the US is it in other countries?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post inquires about the possibility of applying for a Thai tourist visa from the US, citing an upcoming expiration of a Special Tourist Visa (STV). A comment offers advice, stating that each Thai consulate has different requirements for visa applications, including proof of residency and other financial criteria. It suggests contacting the specific embassy for details and notes past practices of obtaining tourist visas in neighboring countries like Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia, or Vietnam.

I’m going to accept this post, and then close commenting. I imagine there will be many questions soon about getting new visas with the STV coming to a (well deserved!) end.

1. Each Thai consulate has their own requirements to acquire a tourist visa. Some require proof of residency, while others only require a tourist visa in the host country, and I think some don’t care. IN PRE-COVID-19, it was EXTREMELY common for people to go to Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia, or Vietnam and purchase new Tourist visas, until the consulate says “no more”.

2. Different Thai consulates accept different proofs of meeting the residency requirements. What those proofs are depends on the consulate.

You should contact the embassy you want to use. You can find a listing of all Thai Embassies and Thai Consulates at

You will still need to meet any financial requirements.
